Yeah, I know, custom sewn spandex dyed with a variety of brick/shading templates and eurethane webbing with acrylic lenses... a lot of time, a lot of energy, and a lot of money. But hey, just humor me for a moment.

What would be the easiest/cheapest way to buy/create a movie-style Spider-Man suit? I'm even willing to do waist-to-neck as a gloved shirt, just so it can be worn as part of a Peter Parker costume. But it doesn't seem like I have many options. The cheap zentai suits on eBay have bumped their shipping up to $25 or so thanks to the new movie, and no licensed item even comes close to accurate, or even good looking for that matter. :(

Should I sew together red and blue Underarmour shirts to make the basic shape, use the excess red for gloves, then use raised silver fabric paint for the webs? Sculpt the webs in Bake-and-Bend Sculpey then glue them down? Modify a licensed costume?

Any replies would be much appreciated. Thanks :)
 
I'm not sure of the your sewing skill level or budget nor the level of accuracy you're looking for.

I doubt that I'd do the underarmor. It's not cheap and if it didn't end up right you'd be out quite a bit of money.

On a budget I'd go with altering a licensed costume. Take it in so it fits more like a spidey suit than pajamas. Add new lenses to the mask. Maybe you could airbrush the muscle pattern on. Then maybe paint the webbing on using some kind of fabric paint that also has a little texture to it. I know someone else can be more specific, I'm just throwin' stuff out here.
 
Although I can get knockoff underarmor for $10 a piece at Wal-Mart, the glossiness of the material and likelihood of it not working seems like too much of a risk.

My worries about modifying a licensed costume is the material itself. It's usually rather bland and doesn't like to stretch very much, especially at the seams. I don't know. I've never seen a Spider-Man suit cost less than half a grand and still look decent.

Anyone know the average price for even a comic or Hammond styled suit? At this point I might as well buck up and save the cash. I've got the better part of a year left, right?

What's the ballpark on one of his suits? As much as I would love eurethane webbing on a Spidey suit, I don't think the price (or for that matter, the fit) would work out.

A comic style, with custom Hammond eyes, would probably be my first choice (not that you care, but it's easier to find what I'm looking for when the people I'm asking actually know what I want :D) and probably the easiest to pull off well.

Dammit, why is such a simple concept such a nightmare to accomplish???

That's actually not too bad, considering how much people are charging for just a mask (and an inaccurate one at that) on eBay and the like.
 
I think that is a great price for those suits. Iassume the urethane suit is probably $800 and the comic style is $400. If I could pull it off I'd definitely get one. That's the best Spidey suit I've seen.
 
I really like the old school comic style outfit. If it is indeed close to 400, I'd be really tempted to pick this up. It's a great incentive to lose that extra baggage around the edges. It's taken me over a year to lose enough baggage to properly fit into my TK armor, so this would be a nice little motivational boost to get "cut". Thanks for the link.

Urethane Webbing runings you in the 1200 + range

the comic book style suit i would guess runs around 600 or 700 or more

Unsewn Printed Lycra.
Red & Blue Suit & New Black Suit
runs the 350 to 400 range

unsewn Printed with Grey Webbing or Grey Black and Spiders 450

Sewn suit prices start at 590 and up
 
Well, it's cool to see more than just myself getting useful info out of this thread. :D

I emailed Spidey4Fun so I can get an inkling of how much I have to save (if it would even fit me in the first place) for one of his suits. Guess that's the route I'm gonna go. Thank you to everyone who provided information, I'm glad to see I don't have to spend a grand for a good Spidey suit :)

EDIT:Hm... might as well ask a few more questions. I'm a tiny guy, so I'm pretty sure any of the (relatively rare) facemasks wouldn't be the right size/proportion for me. Has anyone had any luck making their own without resorting to fiberglass? Should I wear a blank hood underneath the mask instead to cover my ears, etc, or would his suit be thick enough (or so thin that the hood makes it look worse)? The hood I already have is a thick spandex, covering all but my brow to lower lip, with elastic armpit bands to keep it from riding up, like a Toei Sentai under-helmet hood.

Also, what's usually worn under these things? A separate bodysuit to keep you warm/eliminate your body's finer details? Jockstrap, or just the cup? To be or not to be???

And do people expect Spidey to chat with them? I can do a decent enough impression of the '90s animated Spider-Man ("Out of web fluid.") but I don't want to get stopped every five seconds by kids wondering why I don't sound like the movie version. I know, I know, stupid little rambling details, but I don't like being unprepared. It's enough to make me want to just get a symbiote suit and slink about the shadows, scaring the elderly with random shouts of THWIP. and tingling Spider-Senses.

How the hell did a thank you post turn into a multi-paragraph Q&A session?
 
Oops. My bad. From your other post I thought that range was $400 - $800. $1200 + seems more like what it would cost with all the work involved and the urethane. Still probably worth it just not too affordable. :cry

I wear just a cup (took it to the belt sander to eliminate some of the plastic and make it as smooth as possible under my suit.)

I've got a good shape to my head for Spider-Man too, I don't need an undermask. If you do need an undermask, you can have someone on the board make you one I guess and for the least cost I've heard of people using those plastic Mardi Gras masks underneath also.

I don't wear anything else under the suit- it would get way too hot under there.

I don't sound a thing like Spider-Man either- I'm jealous.

Whether your head is the right shape or not, you might want an undermask anyway. I made an appearance as Spidey for a Cinemax event that only lasted 2 or 3 hours and my nose started to hurt. The mask was really starting to put too much pressure on the tip of my nose, pushing it back into the hard cartilage or bone or whatever is in there, heh.

i also make suits, well print them anyway. I have a couple extra i can let go of and i also make a shell if anyone is interested.
