Spider-man suit final stages

Re: Spider-man costume curiosities

I love the contrast that the Slick paint has to the red. Where as I love how shiny the metallic paint is. It's a bit greyer than the slick paint, and feels more like the Raimi costume. So I'm currently deciding between slightly shiny with high contrast or super shiny grey.

The photos were taking immediately after applying the paint to the fabric so I'm also holding out for them to dry in case they change much once settled. I'll edit the results into this post tomorrow in case they take longer than the quoted 4 hours to dry.

It's a little funny, I snapped some shots after applying, and once the paint had died and have been comparing them all day at work. I was pretty much set on the Metallic Black paint. Then I got home, un-pinned the fabric from the board and the second it fell around my hand my mind was set in stone, it has to be Slick Black.

You can click edit on the first post, hit the more options button and it should take you to a page where you can edit the title. :)

Ah ha! Knew it was going to be me not looking hard enough. Thanks! :p

Progress is looking sweet on your suit, keep up the good work. :)

Re: Spider-man costume curiosities and Getting started

I've been giving thought to the lenses for the face shell over the last few days and I'm quite liking the look of overlapping aluminium meshes that I think I saw TJack mentioning somewhere but really can't decide on how to go about making the actual frames to attach them to. Has anyone tried making their own frames and what sort of techniques did you go for? Did you like the results you got?

Quickly throwing in an update of progress, the puff painting is coming along. a few hours every evening has gotten me to the point where the torso, arms and boots are painted. Tulip's Slick Black on the webbing and Tulip's Slick Navy Blue for the blue brick work. I'd say I'm about a third of the way through painting the right leg at the moment which I'm quite happy with considering how daunting all that blue was when I clipped it to the board I'm painting on. :p

Could take up to a week to get the legs all done but then it's just the 5 mask parts and the gloves to finish up the painting. :)

Re: Spider-man lens curiosities and costume progress

So, I hadn't posted an Update in a long time, took a while for my local seamstress to get the suit together, partially because I asked them to sew up the misprint too.

Collected the misprint a couple of weeks back, that's the Black and White Negative Zone ASM2 suit. It's a 2 piece, full body and detached mask with U-Zip down the back. Since collecting I've had it on a duck-tape mannequin (hence forth referred to as "Steve") so I could paint it, using Tulip Metallic White for both web and brick lines although have only worked on the webs thus far. Also used Grease-Proof paper out of the kitchen to trace the chest emblem which was then used to cut from a sheet of Neoprene Rubber.

I then collected the Red and Blue variant, I attempted my 7 Piece Suit idea and it so almost worked, but we had to put a zipper on the waistline as no other fastening method was going to work with the Spandex/Lycra. The overlap on the arms, legs and neck worked perfectly but it was just a shame nothing could hold the stretch apart from the zips, and because zips have no give to them we had to sneak a couple of hidden zips down one side to make it possible to get in and out. Aside from the mid-riff, I was extremely happy with how the suit came out, considering it was both mine and the seamstresses first time doing anything like this the results looks pretty good in my opinion.

Due to a few hiccups in the sewing process, I had less than a week to make it wearable. I used some Low-Cut Kayaking boots for the footwear, putting a whole boot in each Lycra sock, I then cut the sole off the same style Kayaking boot one size up, and glued that to the base of the other boot. The Neoprene Rubber Spider was glued onto the chest. The final hurdle was the commissioned Face Shell and Lenses over-ran, and then got stuck in Customs - *yay* - I got notification only this morning that they've been cleared and will be arriving hopefully within the next 2 weeks. With the event this Saturday just gone I had to botch together a Solution. Using JFCustom's FaceShell and Less pepakura unfolds I quickly threw some foam bits together and cut the lenses out of an aluminium grill and spray painted them, insides black and outsides white. The faceshell didn't have much strength to it in the end so Was having great difficulty attaching the lenses and in the end Glued them straight to the mask and skipped the shell. I totally rage quit while trying to attempt to glue them and in the end had some weird concoction of glue and magnets trying to hold everything together. Racing home on my lunch break the day of the event I glued the other lens on incredibly last minute. (I could still smell the glue while wearing the thing) They look a little close together, and they look pretty bad up close, but it was wearable which was at that stage, what i needed.
