Spider-Man Halloween Costume 2015 WIP

Hello everyone! For the first time I will be attempting to create my very own cosplay completely from scratch. For this project I have chosen to make a Spider-Man suit. I am going for something similar to the ASM2 suit but with slight differences to the suit's pattern and spider emblems. Over the summer I purchased some beautiful, relatively cheap spandex fabric in shiny milliskin navy and dark red. I created some templates based on my own measurements and sewed up most of the suit. Here's what I have so far:

Unfortunately, my crappy phone camera doesn't do the color of the fabrics justice. Anyway, all that is left is to attach the mask and gloves and sew in the zippers. I would've done this by now but since I just started college, I don't really have access to my mom's sewing machine so I will have to do it when I go home for fall break this weekend. In the meantime I've been working on the webbing. I will first draw the lines with a black charcoal pencil and then go over them with black puff paint (either matte or metallic). I started with the boots:

I also plan to craft the eye frames/lenses and the faceshell as well as the chest spider. I will screen print the back spider. I may try to screen print a brick pattern on the blue parts of the suit if I have the time.I will post more pics of the process as I go along. Any tips from those who have experience with Spidey suits are more than welcome!

I always picture Peter Parker sewing away while Aunt May is sleeping or out doing some errands with Mrs Watson(the aunt, not MJ). This way of making a Spidey costume is the way I picture Peter Parker making it for the first time, anyways, carry on...subscribed!

I completely agreed. I think that suit being made this. Will always be more accurate then the best screen accurate suits. Just because it being made using method that Peter would of used.

Thank you so much SaiTurtlesninja! Yeah, one things that always bothered me about the Spidey films is that the suits never looked homemade. In TASM, they showed some of the techniques Peter Parker used (cutting up old sunglasses lenses, screen printing the back spider) but the final suit looked way to professionally crafted. For a someone with probably no costume making/sewing experience, he likely wouldn't be using things like polyurethane molds for the webbing. He'd probably just be some teenager struggling to use a sewing machine for the first time, using cheap fabric paint/ink for the webbing and logos, and looking up Youtube tutorials for stuff (much like myself). Other heroes have the benefit of endless wealth, magic, aliens, or top secret government agencies to supply their costumes. While I hope the next cinematic rendition of Spidey will take that into consideration, I doubt that would happen.

UPDATE:
I know it's been awhile since I posted any progress but with only a few days till Halloween, I have been trying to balance being a college student and tirelessly working on this suit. Over fall break I went home and finished sewing the mask and gloves and installing the invisible zippers. Since it was my first time sewing zippers and I didn't have an invisible zipper foot, the zippers aren't really that invisible haha!

I hand drew and cut a stencil for the back spider. Since I'm basing my chest spider off of the Raimi style one, I wanted my back spider to be more dramatic so I based it off of the Raimi symbiote suit emblem.

Here is how it came out. I attempted to screen-print the back spider using a homemade silkscreen, my stencil, and some fabric paint, but it didn't work out so well so I ended up painting the spider on by hand. I think I'll outline it with a black paint pen to clean up the edges and make it more symmetrical.

I began working on a faceshell using a pepakura file by Gimpee and adapted for EVA foam by JFCustom but it was taking too long. Instead I am using the faceshell that my younger brother used for his Alex Ross spidey costume which was just a cheap plastic spider man mask from Walmart. To get rid of the raised webbing on the mask I coated the whole thing with a layer of spackle (I don't have any tools to sand/grind the webbing off and I didn't wanna do it by hand).

Currently I am simultaneously doing the webbing with matte black puff paint (I know most people use metallic black but I didn't think it was dark enough and I preferred the matte finish as it will better match the paint I am using for the frames) and shaping the eye frames out of 5mm EVA foam. I just hope I can finish in time for Saturday.

Looks awesome so far! The pictures in your last post aren't showing for me though...

Can't wait to see your progress!

Hello again! Sorry I haven't updated in a few days. I was rushing in a vain attempt to finish my suit in time for Halloween and then I got busy with schoolwork. Anyway, the suit was sadly not totally finished but I felt it was decent enough for college parties so I went with it (there were other parties and such going on throughout the week to which I wore my Drive outfit that I've worn in the past). All that is left is the webbing on the arms and back.

For the feet, I tore the soles off of a cheap pair of water shoes and glued them to the bottoms of the feet with some E6000. I've seen other Spideys use this method and used it on my little brother's Alex Ross suit and my little sister's Supergirl costume. A lot of people glue the rest of the shoe to the inside of the boots but I found it was easier to put the shoes on and then put my feet inside the feet of the suit.

These are my frames/lenses. The frames are crafted from 5mm craft foam sheet. I simply traced a template onto the foam, cut, and sanded the edges round. They are sealed with Mod Podge. They're not too pretty up close and I will likely remove them and the lenses and hit them with some primer/spray paint. The lenses are cut out of those thin plastic poster frame/sleeve things and then I put a perforated vinyl decal over them. It's the same type used for signs on store-front windows, they're black on the inside so it's easy to see through. Someone on ebay prints these types of signs but he sold me the plain white decal sheet for really cheap. I will probably make a new pair of lenses that are heat formed to have a dome shape. I also want to install magnets into the frames and faceshell (mine are currently glued to the mask).

My chest spider was a slightly altered version of the Raimi chest spider. I cut it out on 2mm craft foam sheet, brushed on the same paint I used for the webs, and glued it onto the chest.

Also, in case anyone is wondering how I put on the suit (you might be able to tell from earlier pics) there is a separating invisible zipper sewn into the waist of the suit so it goes on just like a shirt and pants and then they attach at the waist. It's kinda difficult to the top on since the zipper doesn't stretch but I'm pretty scrawny so it works ok. I did this because in ASM2 there's a scene where Peter removes the suit as though it were a shirt and pants. Also, I wanted to use as few zippers as possible without having on going straight down the back. There're also invisible zippers in the forearms so I can use my hands and in the back of the head so I can take of the mask.

Anyway, that's all for now! I'll continue to work on bits and pieces here and there but until then I have college to worry about. Thanks for all the interest and feedback! Subscribe if you wanna stay up to date on my progress.
