Spider-man costume help

Alright I have the suit sewn, the lenses cast and the webbing poured and dyed. My question is, is how would you make the webbing have that silver/metal shimmer to look to it? I have heard of using prosthetic adhesive and then applying graphite to it, but I was wondering if anyone knew of a paint or a different way of doing it that Im not aware of. Any help would be much appreciated as I have to have this costume done by May 1st 2010. Thanks

What are your webs cast in?

The webs are cast in smooth on 30 urethane

I dont like adding things to the mixture of the urethane because it will weaken the finished result, and it really needs to be as strong as possible.

Someone one another board suggested car paint. Here is their exact words:

"The paint used at any Car Body shop is the best. It is actually stretchy and rubbery, until you spray lacquer(?) over it to harden and give it a shine.
Whilst working for 6 months at one, my boss told me how he sprayed some leather car seats with car paint and they were fine (and survived fine under the strain).
You also get to be as fussy as you like with the shade. It has to be extremely accurate to match a repaired car.
Just find your nearest shop and ask them in the same way you'd ask for new tyres, exhaust etc, they'll be happy to help"

Any truth to this? To me I still dont think it would hold up to the stretch of the urethane.

Ah, I thought you just added this stuff to the mold instead of mixing it in. Regardless, I understand the concern.

Not heard of the car paint stuff, but I can go ask my auto paint shop if you don't feel like asking yours. Like the other guy said, they are really happy to help.

Yeah metallic powders are usually just brushed lightly on the mold and then they bind to just the outer layer of your cast medium.

That's normally how it's done. Here is a little trick I used to do, get some acrylic paint & add a small amount of a rubber based glue, mix it together then hand paint the webbing.

Well since they are already cast, Ill probably just have to stick with the old prosthetic adhesive and then applying graphite to it. Which is time consuming, but seems to be the best option so far.

Hey man....

I make loads of urethane eyemasks and contrary to popular belief, you CAN paint it.

ANY brand of spray paint will do.....the trick is to only VERY lightly 'dust' the paint on.

Any thick / full layer of paint, will crack and peel.......

You can always use something like Magix - Nu-life, which is a flexible, leather paint.

Main thing to remember is that any painted surface will wear and rub, so the finish will become dull over time.

Looking good Todd. Im in the midst of making one. Frames and shell ordered. I've got McFarlane style comic frames - somehow wanted to go down a slightly different Spidey route, but with old school urethane spiders front and back. The only thing thats concerning me is attaching the shoes. What kind of shoes did you use ?

I used a kung fu shoe because it had the square toe, and my costume was stitched and glued to it.

I've seen water shoes out and about at stores, particularly Wal-Mart, that seem like they'd work really well.

That is another option, I personally dont like them because the black tread usually comes up higher on the sides than I prefer.

I've done ALOT of walking/running/flipping in my suits, and I can't use water shoes anymore, I have to get full slip on leather shoes or tennis shoes that I put in myself, because they're the only things that hold up over continous use. I realize most people don't use their suits as much as I do, but I figured it would help.
