Spawn Mask

Hey guys,
new here to the forums.

Im looking to make and or buy a spawn costume. I've been talking with people over in the costume section on how to make the suit but the problem i keep coming back to is how the hell do i make the mask.

Im looking for a latex plastic look. kind of like the movie spawn but more of the classic outfit.

So my question is. Where do i start if i wanted to make a Mask of spawn?
Or if any one here does custom work let me know.

You need to start by making a clay sculpture of the mask...you can use a mannequin but a lifecast is better...

This is a waterclay sculpture of the SPAWN mask, and I did this about 7 years ago...

Here's the latex rubber casting. I'm sure I have better pics somewhere but for now these will have to do.

Basically sculpt your mask, make a stone mold which will probably be a 2 piece mold...then pour your latex rubber into the mold and let it dwell for whatever amount of time...drain the excess latex...and once the mask is set pull it out of the mold.
Trim, paint and enjoy!

I over simplified the process but essentially that's it. Lots of 'How To's' on making your own latex mask on this site. :thumbsup

Good Luck!

Wow. That is amazing!!

I’m not that talented though. I might just go with the burned face look. To do something like that would take me about 8 years. That’s if I could even do it in the first place.

I’m assuming you can’t remake that from the mold since you did it so long ago. But that may be the best spawn costume I’ve ever seen. And if you can recreate it, I would be willing to buy it.

Thanks for the kind words but no, sorry...besides everything you need to know about doing this yourself is all here on the RPF.
Don't sell yourself short...it may take some practice but it's not impossible to do.

If it's the burnt Simmons face look you ultimately want to go with, I own one of the production made appliances. Here's some pics that might help you...

im assuming i make a cast mold of my head first. useing plaster?

Then i fill it up with plaster?

after that i will have a solid head.
then add clay to my head mold. after i add cly do i bake the clay to make it hard before casting it in plaster?

what are the best materal brands to use? and where can i get it?

Here is a Spawn movie mask that I had bought about 5 years ago.

I also made a silk cape for it & added green lenses for the eyes.

Hi,
Here is one i made from latex. This is from a while back.
The original mold was purchased from an artist up north.

The original mold was severely damaged in transit , so i had to repair the mold and make a new master.
I used urethane for this one.
But you can use clay.
Wax and water based clay do not need to be baked, but might need to be sealed.
You will need to be able to remove your master from the stone mold.

The steps from here is how to make a stone mold for a latex cast.

I used ultracal to cover the master.

remove your master
Then fill with latex. wait, pour out.
repeat until the thickness desired.

wait a day then, remove your cast.

These are a very basic overview on making a latex mask.
Hope that helps.

Hell i would pay for a spawn mask. i think i can make the suit. will take me some time but i think i could pull it off. the mask.. i'm 100% sure i cant make

Awesome spawn mask! I would love to have one of those.

Wow man.. great job. i wish i had your skill.

RacerMachX - That is awesome.....I would wear that just cause....no reason...just cause.

Thanks for the comments. :$

Unfortunately, the reworked stone mold has ran its course of pulls.
And i haven't had time to make another one.
At one time, i was entertaining the thought of a dragon skin mask or a resin cast bust (with glowing eyes :thumbsup).
But of course, not enough time.

theres never enough time in a day :p

Can you guys give me a list of the best materials to use to make a life cast and molding cley and where to even buy this stuff at. My craft store near me doesnt cary it.

I order most of my supplies from Smooth-on
Smooth-On, Inc. - Mold Making & Casting Materials Rubber, Plastic, Lifecasting, and More
They have tutorials on most of the life cast products.
For sculpting clay, i started with WED clay. Its cheap, smooth with water and soft.
Good stuff for beginners. But you do have to cover your sculpt with wet cloth when not working with it.
I actually got mine from a pottery store.
