Awhile ago I had posted some pictures of a piece of leather armor I made from Spartacus: Blood and Sand. Since then I've made about five sets of the armor for various members here and wanted to share the pictures of the latest set:

Wow man, that looks awesome! I showed the pics to Kyle Rowling who is a close friend and who played Drennis in the pilot episode (he's the big Thracian with long dark hair that becomes Spartacus' friend and is the one they show in the arena in the opening scene). He said it looked pretty much exact to the ones on set. The aging is really, really impressive. Awesome work, brother!

The aging is almost entirely manual labor, a lot of hand wrinkling, hitting/cutting/scratching the material with different objects, and though it isn't baked (though that could be an idea to try) I did kiss it with a blowtorch in a few places. Mahogany and chocolate brown leather dye and sealed with Dr. Jackson's Water Protector to finish it.

@Hoplite- That's really awesome! That's a great compliment coming from someone who has seen the real thing.

How'd u develop your patterns? Also. How similar are the rivets and buckles to the ones on tv. Congrats on a sweet replica here.

Out of curiosity are you still willing to make some to sell? And if so, how much?

Kyle and I are actually doing a class on fundamentals of gladiatorial combat (and we're currently working on a book on the topic) at CombatCon (check out www.thecombatcon.com) in Vegas this year, and would love to get some for myself as well as let people know where they can get some.
 
@theyrenotdolls: I made the original patterns just based on looking at a bunch of stills I captured from the show. The rivets are pretty spot on from what I could see, but then again, its just a flat head copper rivet, nothing too special. The buckles aren't perfect but this particular client has some allergies to metals and I had to use stainless steel fittings and they are as close as I could find. Then just painted on the texture and rust and sealed them.

So did you just eye ball the pieces using stills from the show to get your sizing and proportions right? I'm new to this and have been looking everywhere for a better way to get the proportions right than just trial and error. Is there even a better way?
 
@Hobbes - I used the stills as reference and cut my pieces out of cardstock first, put them on my mannequin, and made modifications till everything looked right. Unfortunately unless you are working from pre-existing patterns, trial and error is pretty much the only way in my experience. The trick is to do it out of cheap material
 
Amazing work bro...the weathering is outstanding! Not getting any closer to the real thing then that! Might need to commission one very soon :). Have the full Snake Champion armor being done as we speak and would love this aswell. Any chance of getting a price...PM it maybe? Cheers
