Spartacus: Blood and Sand Gladiator Costume

Welcome to the RPF, Omegaman; good to have one of the experts from the RAT over here and contributing. I'm not a member of RAT myself but I do lurk there a lot and I find a lot of the info there very interesting if a bit over my head at times. You'll find that there a lot of the same kind of people here as on RAT, just switch out historically accurate for canon and you'll find the same attention to detail as well as some of the same debates.

Definitely looking forward to what a Roman history/gladiator expert can contribute to this thread. With your input this thread will, hopefully, move some more and we can start seeing some Spartacus costumes being made.

This is what i have so far. I am making a costume of Spartacus from what he wears in the ludus. First time working with leather, i need to stain it to get the right shade, weatherize it and I am also planning on etching hieroglyphic drawings on it. I will be working on the belt and "underwear" or whatever it is called once im done with the manica.
I started with a pen marked piece of leather because this was a practice peice but it ended up coming out decent so i hope that once i stain it, the pen markings go away. if not i may need to make another.

That is BEAST! Would you mind sharing the templates?

What he means is if you could upload & post or PM the link to the template that you used to make the manica with; that's assuming that you used a template to make it and didn't just freehand it.

oh. No i didnt use a template. I free handed and cut as needed to get it as close as possible.

If it adds any light on the subject, the Spartacus: Blood and Sand series was a little better at reproducing actual gladiator outfits than others; Crixus (left) is dressed as a Murmillo, Spartacus (right) is, naturally, outfitted as a Thraex. These two types were very similar, the main difference being the Thraex (a representation of Thracian warriors) had a cuved sword called a sica (rather than the Murmillo's Roman standard Gladius) and a smaller rectangular shield. If you're looking for better info on coming up with Spartacus' garb, you can find a lot of pictures and info if you search THRAEX. There are actually reenactors of gladiatorial combat in Italy! ( I assume they don't kill each other as frequently)

I have found a great many Murmillo helmets on ebay, but the exact visors here might have been created by the producers to better show the faces of the actors.

The one on the right is Spartacus. The left is Crixus.

I'm after the following costume pieces:

1. Waist belt (Looks like a modified weight lifting belt)
2. Undergarment
3. Sash
4. Shin guards
5. Right arm guard
6. Left arm wrappings
7. Sword
8. Sandals

Thanks!

Hi I am make a costume like this. I am using paper and glue, and cereal boxes, the helmet looks pretty nice but it takes a lot of time. I work as a carpenter ,that's why I'm planning to make the sword and shield out of wood. For this i will use plywood and alluminum and copper strips.
I will use leather for the belts .
Check the picture , i will try to make it realistic, but once again it takes time.I checked in you tube videos they explain how to make it..
