Space:1999 year 2 uniform with jacket

My first post on the costume forums.

I was always a big fan of the art design for Space:1999, I felt the sets, model work, and costuming was first rate for that era. The uniforms were created in the first year by Rudi Genreich, and were rather minimalist. For the second year the art designer Ketih Wilson took the basic uniform and decked it out with new patches, ID badges, colored collars, and skirts for the women. There were also new jackets which were worn by some characters (mostly male).

I first made this costume a few years back (I won't mention which Bush was president) but recently went back to it and did a big upgrade.

I basically adapted a basic turtleneck pattern for the tunic. The pants were made by buying some cheap dress slacks at a Goodwill store, ripping them apart and using the pieces as a pattern. Getting a base fabric that was a good approximation for the color was a pain. The original costume was a light beige that was washed out by the studio lights to look on film as a very light gray or even occasionally a pale whitish-yellow. I found a light brown-beige that came somewhat close and bought a few yards.

Commlock prop on the belt was a complete scratch build from sheet plastic. The stun gun was a child's toy squirt gun from the 1970s, which was (for that era) a reasonably good approximation of the size and shape of the prop. I had to do a lot of reshaping of the hand grip and redid a lot of the details (including making a working trigger).

The base jacket was a nylon-cotton exercise jacket I found at a thrift shop. I then added all the cream colored highlights, new collar, and some patches I bought from some online venders.

Great work, John! :thumbsup

Always glad to see love for the residents of Moonbase Alpha. :cool

I dunno about Hushpuppies on the moon ...

But seriously, nice work. I prefer the first season look though I realize that the redesign is probably a little more realistic/practical.

That's totally cool..SPACE 1999 was such an inspiration.....I'm very sad about Gerry Anderson RIPing....the comm prop is excellent really everything looks great. Hope you have room in your backyard for that full scale Eagle replica build.

Hey, Johntrek -- a very nice, accurate-looking costume there! And the colours look spot on!

... I've been wanting to make one myself but don't know too much about fabrics... just wanted to ask, what type of fabric did you find in the light beige? It looks like it has a good close fit on you as opposed to some other fan versions which sometimes look too big and baggy.

Shakeyspear,

Thanks for the comments on my 1999 costume effort. I am like you, my knowledge of fabrics is not that extensive. The closest description I can come to is "a knit", because when I go to the big fabric stores, or the downtown fabric district in LA, the fabrics I find that are the closest to what I used on my costume seem to always show up in the "knit" department.

I have scraps left over from the original project, in fact I had so much I ended up making a first year tunic with a technical department (brown) sleeve. I could send you a sample, and you could always go into a fabric store and compare to what you find there, and even ask someone who works there "what the bloody hell is this?"

I share your observation about many of the Alphan costumes you find in pictures on the net. They seem to have a terrible fit. I think most people who try to make one are not that experienced, and have trouble getting the fit to look good. I'm not that great of a tailor myself, and am pretty much self taught. But I went to the effort to put darts in the back of the tunic to help suck in the waist line, and adjusted the fit multiple times until I had something that contoured well. I suspect most of the really baggy costumes you encounter (and there were a couple real saggy ones at the Alpha 2012 convention) are made by people who did not spend the time to make a 2nd (or 3rd and 4th in my case) pass at the fitting to get the thing to hang right.

That's just a fantastic piece of work. I can't like this enough, and from my favourite show of all time! Thumbs way up!

Missed this the first time nice work on the costume and yes hush puppies were used by the background Actors.

Not all had the high heeled disco boots!!

Not only background actors like this poor chap getting sucked out into the Big Black.
