Sonic RPF Contest Build

Man, that is one sexy emitter head. Looking forward to seeing the finished prop!

(also, this ends my lurking streak. Hello RPF!)

Well my new 3D machine has finally turned up, well it showed up about 2 moths ago, however due to work I could not get this to you guys until now, and it’s a makerbot replica2, I did place an order for it some time back and plan on 3D printing some of the parts that go into making the doctors sonic. :love

And so one of the first parts I have taken on is the grip, but before I start churning out 3D printer parts I first had to work out how to use it, and this did take some time and at one point I was thinking that I had just waisted a large amount of money but with a lot of perseverance and a lot of failed attempts I started to get some pleasing results.

One of the issues and it was the main issue, was that the layers were very rough with intermittent layers been laid down, this was due to the size of the PLA filament been smaller than the specifications stated, the specification for the PLA filament had the filament at a size of 1.75mm but it was actually 1.57mm, so I had to make an adjustment to the filament extruder gear, and with the next test build I started to get excellent results.

So now that I was in a better place with how the 3D Replicator2 was now preforming I made a start on the grip, It took about and 1hr to replicate on the medium settings with a resolution of 0.270 microns, I then reprinted the same part but now with a resolution of 0.150 microns with an extruder temp of 240c with a feed rate of 70 mm/sec the build platform was set at 0.20 microns from the extruder tip, makerbot recommend that it be set at 0.10 microns, but with this setting the filament would pond to the acrylic build platform and removing the part from off the build platform became difficult.

I did take some photo’s of the printer making the grip and some other parts but they are on another flash drive that I did not take to work with me.

The build is still very much progressing, however it is at a slow pace and this is due to my unavailable free time at this point, but I will try and get some new info to you guys as soon as I can.

Will start a thread about the Replicator2 3D printer, separate from this one so not to deviate from the build. However I will post some parts on the build thread as I make them.

The build is still very much progressing but slowly. Tuff sonic to build, but the hard parts are complete.

Just be sure to post a link to the 3D printer thread in this one so we can hop back and forth, OK?

Good luck with the fabrication and build...and short run to follow.

Damn judges picking the hardest ones! :lol
