Solo: A Star Wars Story

Re: Star Wars Anthology (Young Han Solo)

I didn't hear The Wook being anti-Semetic. I heard him pointing out a backstory connection where AE came into Speilberg's sights. His point was about social circles, not religions/ethnicities.

Paul Giamatti can light up the screen & draw your attention like a tractor beam too. But I don't want him playing young Han Solo. If the actor is wrong for the part then he's wrong for it.

I agree that this casting smells at least a little bit funny.

The older SW fanbase will NOT forgive this one if it doesn't work well. And even if it does "work" it will probably still hurt the movie (and character!) It would reduce what might have been. That is even worse in a way.

No matter how you stack it this is frustrating.

I think they should have just hired some guy called Harrison to play it. I was amazed at what they did with Micheal Douglas' character in Ant Man. Just hire Harrison and your done.
Quite frankly, I just don't see anyone else playing Han Solo or Indiana Jones. Those characters are just so iconic and fused with Harrison Ford any other substitute in my eyes is headed for a failure.

And it sounds like he might have been up for it: https://www.yahoo.com/movies/harrison-ford-nominates-himself-to-play-young-han-164635116.html

Did you see Captain America:CW yet? They did that with RDJ too.

Yes, I just saw CA:CW this last weekend and totally forgot that they did
that with Tony Stark too. It looked amazing and was completely convincing.

Re: Star Wars Anthology (Young Han Solo)

I didn't at first... but, the follow up post changed that.

Re: Star Wars Anthology (Young Han Solo)

Harrison Ford couldnt possibly do the Young Han Solo lead due to its physicality alone. The guy is well known to push himself to, in and past injury but reality and age with past war injuries take its toll. Ill go on record and say this, Han BECOMES Han Solo as we know him, he wont BE Han Solo until after this adventure. Thats no spoiler but something rather obvious. One thing that few either catch or mention with Ford's Han Solo is he comes from great loss. There is a dark sense of humor and nothing left to lose aura about him thats clearly conveyed on camera. He would have known a much different life leading up to what made him go off the grid becoming a "criminal", smuggler and pirate. So far all people have talked about is him meeting Chewie, the Imperial Academy, height... Nothing about what made him into what he will be as we first see him and what he will become by the films end. Top that with the potential for a sequel of a "Solo Adventure" as the Han Solo we grew up with being chased by bounty hunters and other pirates...

As far as the Wook, he's a great guy and long time RPF'er. For those that either forgot or didnt know, he WAS Chewbacca for LFL back during EP3 appearances and promotions.

Re: Star Wars Anthology (Young Han Solo)

I agree they needed a new actor for young Han. Harrison can be de-aged but that kind of work is a severely limiting & expensive issue. They end up building the rest of the scene around making that work.

Notice how the CGI young-Arnie in modern Terminator movies is always getting his face damaged within 30 seconds of showing up. Even older Arnie kept his sunglasses on a lot in T3. It's not a coincidence.

The same logic says they shouldn't audition 2500 new actors, and pick somebody who doesn't particularly resemble Harrison & is half a foot smaller. They had everybody on earth to choose from. Why give themselves any unnecessary difficulties? I refuse to believe this Alden guy was the only decent contender. If they want him in a new SW movie there are plenty of other roles.

I guess it's just a new face for the character, period. They might not even bother giving this guy a hair color/style like Ford's was.

The de ageing technology is expensive, and best used in short scenes, plus the original actor has to wear all the motion capture gear, and after insisting Han be killed off, do you really think he would want to play him again, especially with his old man voice?

Re: Star Wars Anthology (Young Han Solo)

Yeah, the argument is, it they couldn't make it convincing enough for a full movie. But isn't SW about breaking new ground with technology? Harrison probably wouldn't want to do it, though. It may add a full year to the production time. But I wouldn't mind in this case.

Re: Star Wars Anthology (Young Han Solo)

I say let's give this actor a chance. This film is pointless for a whole bunch of other reasons

It's pointless if every SW movie outside the trilogies is pointless.

There's nothing wrong with doing this Han Solo movie on paper. We're just dismissive because we completely assume they're going to mess it up.

I'm kind of scared they are going to overdo the "transformation" into Han Solo bit. He's smartass & self-interested & mustrusting in ANH, so does that mean he's gonna start out the opposite in this new movie for a big character arc? Some of that is good but I think it's a mistake to go far with it. Han is Han. The guy we knew in the OT was the real guy, and he always had one foot in thug territory. His situation at the beginning of TFA just confirms it.

I agree. They should take note that Better Call Saul was mostly boring, because the whole first season showed Jimmy McGill as a noble warrior, and not the sleazy, self-centered con man we'd previously fallen in love with in Breaking Bad.

A small arc for Han's okay, particularly if the film starts with him at the Imperial Academy (which I don't think it will), but I definitely don't wanna see a 180 turnaround in his character over 120 minutes.

Or how about what they did with Evans for 30 minutes of movie in the first CA? Or Brad Pitt in Benjamin Button?

I doubt they do anything of that nature, but to say they can't or it's too hard is just wrong. It's been done, done well, and for a lengthy amounts of screen time.

The Wook

I don't agree with this. I wasn't bored at all by watching saul. I WANTED to see what made Jimmy *become* Saul. I wanted to know more with each episode how we get from Jimmy to Saul. That has been the thrill of it for me, and has also given me alot more insight into and affection for Saul.

However, Star Wars is not Breaking Bad, and Jimmy/Saul is not Han Solo. I don't think there is much of a comparison.
