I think this whole argument is dumb, I'm far more interested in how he portrays the character then how tall he is in real life.

Clooney's not 5' 11", he's 5' 10". And he's a good 3" - 4" taller than the new Solo, as you can see in this more-straight-on photo.

The whole height discussion is hilarious, but, take about 2" off all those stats. Its difficult to get an honest height with Clooney as he injured his spine many moons ago resulting in a constant slouch and sort of head tilt. While filming Gravity there was a lot of use of a double for even the most basic wire work due to this. Dont get me wrong he is one of the most strait shooters in the industry to the point he and Tom Hanks in a knife fight would be over who is going to butter whoes bread for the homeless guy across the street, but again, I look completely over his head and down. He is likely wearing a back brace in that picture, you can even see his head is down and forwards. I can confirm 100% Brolin is about 5'8" barefoot. On Hateful8 I looked over Tatums head yet again while he was in boots. Ironically people never seem to comprehend im over 6' as I lean and slouch after my neck being broken back in 2010. Something very 6th grade about all this height talk.

Robstyle, since you've met most these guys, I'll take you at your word, that...

Tatum = 5' 11"
Clooney = 5' 9"
Brolin = 5' 8"

Which means that our new Han Solo is about 5' 6" tall, as evidenced here by this pretty straight-on photo. Clooney's appears to be having a difficult moment in the pic coping with his spine injury, but we've seen in other photos in which he's standing straight that he's several inches taller than the new Han Solo. In this photo, the 5' 11" Tatum is standing askew on one leg, which drops him down an inch or more, puting him at 5' 10", and he towers over the new Han Solo. And Brolin, who is 5' 8", is standing right next to the new Han Solo, is standing straight up (basically), and is a good 2" taller than the new Han Solo. Crikey, looking at this photo, the 5' 8" Brolin might be THREE inches taller than the new Han Solo.

So, @Bryancd et al, in case you've not been following the math, our new Han Solo is 5' 6".

I'll gladly eat mine if his performance is just so stunningly incredible that I forget he doesn't look anything like Han Solo. I want this film to be good but I'm having great difficulty seeing that happening... Heck, I'd almost prefer a CG Han over this guy and that's saying something.

Of all Star Wars films rumored or getting made, this is the only one I was they'd just scrap at this point.

I hope I'm wrong but this feels to me like a trainwreck in the making. I have no confidence in the directors (21 Jump Street?! Seriously?!) or the alleged casting. About the only plus to this is Kasdan is writing but I'm not sure even that'll be enough.

I don't actually care how tall the guy is, as long as he can carry off the vibe. The film can be shot in ways that make him appear taller, or so that it isn't clear how tall he is exactly. His look otherwise will likely be heavily affected by how he's costumed. How he behaves will be a big part of it, too.

Again, look at Ewan MacGregor. The guy looks NOTHING like Sir Alec Guinness, even at a young age. Also, he's Scottish and Guinness was English. If all you'd ever seen of him was, say, Trainspotting or A Life Less Ordinary or Velvet Goldmine, you'd think NO WAY can he play Obi-Wan Kenobi. And yet, he delivered one of the best performances in the PT AND managed to act "through" Lucas' direction and dialogue! He felt like what you'd expect a young Obi-Wan to be. That's all I'm looking for out of this guy. If they can pull that off, awesome. If not...eh, whatever. If Disney/LFL does what it plans to do with Star Wars movies -- where it's cranking out, like, 4-5 of them every 2-3 years, one mediocre film in the entire ouvre won't matter, as long as -- on balance -- they're good.

People forgave the weaknesses of The Incredible Hulk and Iron Man 3 because enough OTHER good Marvel Movies (and other properties) came out to make them fade into the background. It's not like, say, a bad Bond film when you won't be getting another one for another 3-5 years, or back in the old days when a bad Indy or Star Wars movie meant that you were "stuck" with this being the ONLY stuff you got. We can survive a "meh" Star Wars Anthology film, or at least we'd better learn to, because they won't bat 1000 on this.

True but the beard helps obscure his face in two of the movies and minimally there's 20 years between McGregor's Obi-wan and Guinness' so there is room to fudge there. Plus Guinness' Obi-wan lived in a desert the whole time (or until a new movie screws that up) so I can sorta reconcile the idea that he just aged badly.

The casting doesn't bother me, but there's a world of difference in playing a guy 40-50 years younger than he was when he shows up on film and then having to play a guy - who - is supposed to be a character you see in another movie at basically the same age.

Maybe they'll do some movie magic and try change his a look a bit. ILM does like to push the envelope.

It's easier to pull off going from a young man to older man. Like Mcgregor to Guinness when there was about a 20 year gap in the story and he's stuck on a double sun planet. To me, there was enough similarity in the characterization I believed it, of course short of time traveling to get a younger Guinness to play the role, it would never be perfect. It didn't matter that he looked like nothing like Guinness looked at those real young ages, it matter that the character did to a degree. Plus the beard disguises face shape of Guinness a lot more. This Han Solo film is going from a younger man to a young man. Probably going from 22 year old to 32 years old, give or take a year or two. The height thing complaints are silly and the least of my worries, I know Ford was listed at 6'1" some places but he's really probably closer to 5'11" If they can make 5'9" Tom Hardy look like around 6'5" as Bane, what is 3 inches? It's not like there will be lots of familiar people standing around him for reference. Chewie towers over everyone anyway. Modern make-up can do a lot, I recall they did work on Joseph Gordon-Levitt in Looper, with prosthetics they made him look more like a young Bruce Willis would look, but that was easier because the time gap between the ages was much greater. I doubt they told Alden he can/will go into the film 100 percent looking like he does. But I am trying not to think about this film much. I am focusing on Rogue One, and especially EP8 & 9.

Agreed. That's basically the issue I'm having. There's very little difference in appearance from 22 to 32. He can be the best actor alive but if he doesn't look like the character he's playing, it's highly doubtful I can buy it. He'll just look like some random Joe cosplaying Han Solo.

Sure, let's make something out of nothing. He's 5'8" (max) so WGAS anyway...

I agree, Coop, that O'Connell is too short for the part as well. He's probably 5' 6", just like the guy who got it. But the implication he's making is interesting. And IINM, Anthony Ingruber has not mentioned anything at all--much to the disappointment of his supporters who pushed him for the role--about his failure to get the part, or if he even got to audition for it.

The whole thing smells like rotten Hollywood politics, and we all know what kind of juice Ehrenreich's # 1 fan, Spielberg, has in that town.

Alden looked like a tiny little boy man in 'Hail Cesar', small, sharp and sinewy. Not a rugged, manly Solo type. Weird choice.
