Okay, i've searched the web for tidbits regarding the large 4ft Jupiter 2 prop and during my research I ran numerous pics showing the old girl before she was beautifully restored. She was a mess to say the least.
-- the extra windows along the rim were added so the Jupiter could be reused as a background building in another Irwin Allen production that never went past the pilot stage, but many who had the luxury of handling the prop notices other changes that, to my knowledge, have been a mystery - like why was the top dome replaced with an oversized one and why was one added to the bottom? Well, I'm not sure I have the direct answers, but it seems the Jupiter made one final flight as a space vehicle in 1978 that, until now, I believe has gone unnoticed.
I was watching my episodes of SOAP last night and one of my favorite episodes is where Burt is abducted by aliens and a duplicate is send down to take his place (it's been 2000 years since this space man has had sex, so Burt's poor wife is really put through the ringer). Anyhow, when burt is beamed aboard the ship the craft hovers over him for a few seconds and I was as shocked as any good nerd would be -
Like I said - not sure if this has been mentioned before - but I have to say, it was nice to see the Jupiter got to make one more trip around the block before being put to pasture.
