So, Disney + is going to start imbedding commercials…

That is awesome news. Now I can catch-up on the gripping story of Jake from State Farm while watching The Mandalorian.
The least they can do is subtly weave Jake from State Farm into the narrative:

"Uh oh Mando... looks like you're not paying an affordable price on your spacecraft insurance! We'd better put a hold on this mission and check the scanner for the nearest galactic personal price plan agent. Like a good neighbor, this is the way."

See? Seamless.

As much as this new ad supported tier sucks, it makes a lot of sense from a business perspective. With so many different streaming services these days it's getting expensive to try and keep up with them all and many people are dropping the services that they don't watch much. So adding a cheaper subscription tier at the expense of having to sit through commercials, might entice people to switch to this lower tier and suffer through the commercials instead of canceling outright because they have too many different subscriptions,

I'm not feeling an ounce of sympathy for a company that's charging more for a service they created at the tail end of 2019. A small company having to raise prices to survive is a totally different animal than a megacorporation with billions at it's disposal looking to make a few extra million off of you. I get that the cost of everything raised in the world due to the pandemic, etc, etc, etc, but it's not like Disney + existed for a decade and they then decided to raise the price to offset inflation. It's been around for less than 3 years and already they found a way to charge people more.

The cost of owning multiple streaming services is fast eclipsing the cost that basic cable used to charge. If you want to watch all the content available you're going to be paying at least the cost of a monthly utility bill to cover the cost of internet service, the electricity to your home, and then each of the channels you stream from. I'm well aware that other platforms like YouTube have also done similar, but they've also been around for far longer by comparison and I don't know a single person who was willing to cough up more to not have to watch advertisements. You watch, each new streaming platform will follow suit when Disney implements this rate hike, and your monthly bills are going to climb as you pay for your content.

I get that this is a matter of convenience or preference for most, but I for one think it's pretty ridiculous that they aim to charge more this early in the game.

At the very least, grandfather in the current customers and make new subscribers pay for commercials.

At least when Paramount+ added their new tier, (live television viewing and download to watch later), their commercial viewing tier went DOWN in price from $7.99 to $4.99 a month.

I think that they should take their fee-based replication of the terrestrial TV experience one-step further…

I recommend that they hit their content with a 5 minute “loss of signal“, at the start of every program, unless you pay an extra $5 per-month for an upgraded service package.

We’re a family of 6 (mom & dad + 4 kids) and we watch Disney+ all day- literally. I watch all the Star Wars and Marvel movies/shows, my wife watches movies from their extensive library, and my 10 year old has been binging all their kids shows for years like Bizardvark, Jessie, Bunk’d, The Suite Life, Austin & Ally, Good Luck Charlie, Liv & Maddie, Stuck In The Middle, Ravens Home, Big City Greens, Wizards of Waverly Place, Gravity Falls, etc….. (I watch a lot of these shows with her and honestly they are not that bad)

I’m also in my late 40s and I grew up with 3 TV stations and every show I watched was stuffed with commercials. We had Cable but all the stations that showed TV shows had commercials also so they don’t really bother me that much.

I’m also in my late 40s and although I’m far from rich I’m definitely in a place in my life where I have the extra $2 or whatever to keep my Disney+ commercial free.

Disney+ adding tiers/commercials means nothing to me and it isn’t a hill I’m going to die on. I really don’t care and I won’t miss the extra $2 a month.

That's what ad blockers are for.
Haven't found one that works. If you know a good one for Android, please share ; ) And don't say AdBlock plus. They track your web usage and share info with third parties. Don't trust em. Well don't trust any web services now, but have to use some.

The most irritating thing is probably 1 in 10 ads will be for the precise thing you're currently trying to watch. That happened all the time for me on Hulu, and I'd honestly rather ignore watch two ads for some random product than sit though a trailer for the movie or show that just got paused.
The other 9 will be for stuff I don't care about.

Yup, but I think in most cases the raised costs are out of control particularly when it comes to corporations.
And don't get me started on gas prices....(must control my blood pressure...)

39% increase in monthly fees is a little wacko.
And since my salary has only gone up only 2% in the last year while everything else is up 20, 30, 40%; I'm fairly certain D+ is one of the things that I'll end up cutting.

Will they offer a Disney SUPER PLUS EXTREME mode, where they charge even more a month, but its now ad free?
I've never used any of these services before and have thankfully had friends that did, so I could watch some of this stuff.
But really, I just don't watch tv at all. In the past 4 years, I've seen the two Mandalorian seasons and Obi-wan.....I think thats it....can't even remember if there was another.
I think I'm more happy complaining about stupid tv shows/movies/life stuff here with you guys than actually watching any of it.

It's not the amount of money itself that's in question, it's the principle of paying more to prevent ads. I'm genuinely surprised about the lack of the realization that this is going to set a precedent for other streaming services to do the same and that it will likely escalate. Oh well as long as you get your precious content above all else.
