Sliders Timer...Egyptian Timer!!

Tif, looks great, so did you get your dad into this or was it all on his own?

Prop building family, is pretty cool!

I convinced him to put up a shingle at last year's Wonderfest. He's always made interesting things, I don't think he knew what he was getting into with these props!

amazing video of the original timer start-up, looked wild with the egyptian timer, why not do the original timer as well?...the hardest part is over- the power up preamble, im very excited to see where this goes..

anyway know if thermal was going to do an egyptian kit?

I actually thought we were going to do lighting for the original FIRST. (That was only over a year ago!) But, the $$ wheel gets the grease, and the Egyptian won out.

yes, this is what i keep hearing- and that is cool- the egyptian is for sure greasy, and im really excited for this kit, a classic piece of sliders. i was just wondering (still) cause id hate to think of this whole power up preamble display going to wastes-since it was so distinct to the original, besides counting down and a few bargraphs blinking-the power up what was what really separated the two- aside from the housing design.. .

hope he keeps up the good work, id like to see more like this

good job!

Wow!! This is great!! Cool logo on the board!!

I decided to make the metal scarab for my dad. Here's the completed vector art (just doing a size check).

Oh, and a new video of the timer's electronics showing all the features:

Anyone know where to get the right keypad for this thing? I've followed links before that come to nothing.

PeterLC, my dad said you can find them on Digikey. I'll ask him for a link.

Work on the "crown":

really liking the updates.. still a little curious why nobody on this forum of all places so far havent pointed our their curiosities on the GEnSEr power up preamble of the original timer- on the egyptian timer..

i wonder if he'd sell whatever programmed chips hes using separate

"Whatever programmed"

He wrote the program on that chip.

What IS the actual Egyptian timer sequence?

Ive now finished my Egyptian Timer with Juno's dads electronics and i just have to say WOW your dads the man. The Scarab your in the process of making is absolutely beautiful to, you both make a great team.

With regard to the Genser Sequence on the egyptian timer, i like to think in theory that at some point during the show quinn swapped some chips around from his original timer. Mabie in the vain attempt they still stored coordinates for earth prime somewhere, thus resulting in the sequence. Hey its an idea lol!

I love the sequence anyway whichever Timer its on.

Heres a video of my Timer: My Egyptian Timer in Action! - YouTube

i can guarantee he did write the program on the chips (who else would of)? ,yet he surely didnt invent the display -i inquired over the "whatever chips" cause im unsure what chip or pic or whatever was used in the final prototype before sending off for the printed circuits, i inquire cause there seems to very little of a difference between THIS specific circuit and the original... except the original timers bargraphs "chased" eachother instead of blink in patterns and the original had little red blinking leds (colons) between each 2 characters of digits..different case housings of course

the egyptian timer didnt have much of a boot up or "power up preamble" aka (GEnSEr sequence) which is well documented - upon start up the timing display would dance between 52:52:52 to 25:25:25 to 52:52:52 and so on for a few measures with the little "beeping" noises from the buzzer after each change of the display then rest at zero to be programmed to desired time, not nearly as flashy- and i know the vast majority of homemade egyptian replicas omitted this function completely cause it doesnt really matter i suppose and theres only so many times someone would turn on/off, on/off to see it

i dunno, just curious

but if yer dads doin the circuit and yer doing a scarab thing- is anyone doing a kit?

and how did sparticus weasel his way with one already? lol, congrats on your timers btw, -hope youll be makin more after u got rid of yours

best,
-Rebel

I'm still working on the scarab, I rejected the etching they showed me Friday. Dad programmed his electronics to match what sparticus86 wanted! The display is just a Digikey part, no?

Well, I'd definitely spend $150-175 on a set of electronics for an original timer if they were done as professionally as these. But I couldn't fund their development as the original customer did on this build. There's enough interest amongst the timer junkies here, and enough of the groundwork has been done with this version, that it shouldn't be THAT hard to come up with a design and implementation of working electronics for the original version. Should it...?

Actually, Harbinger, if I could say somthing with what you said here:

"it shouldn't be THAT hard to come up with a design and implementation of working electronics for the original version. Should it...? "

In my personal experience, (as I currently am working on a Sliders Timer replica, which you can see on my friend's youtube channel here: sliders timer proto type2.wmv - YouTube
(also my friend Tom helped with my timers creation, I must add)

Though a timer may perhaps work similar, and though the "design" is indeed, not too difficult, it is the programming , (or in the case of creating a different sliders timer, than say, the egyptian), which is the most difficult to create.

And indeed, most difficult to modify to the specifics of a device.

My timer I have created , I had to write code as well, and currently only have 4 digits. When the time comes that I expand to six or eight or nine digits, as simple as it seems to just expand , I expect it to be somewhat difficult to do. (Course I just do this as a hobby, got no schooling of electronics, so I am by no means, an expert.)

Anyhow, the main thought I'm trying to bring forth is that, it is not as easy as it looks. Trust me.

if the micro chip was made available..itd be a simple rewire for those who knew what to look for, and most importantly knew what they were doing- "whatevers programmed" in there-which we will refer to as "chip", whatever chip is what drives what appears from the videos to be all the functions..including the patterns in which the bargraphs blink in patterns- assuming you could swap the red for green, as as i said rewire it to be a different board size and the bargraphs be below the display the best you could hope for would be similar to thermalized plastics timer replica from many many moons ago, and in my belief one of the first functional sliders props as seen here Sliders - Timer Replica Prop - YouTube

that basically be it, as you see the bargraphs blink in patterns instead of chase and the 4 colons between the digits are missing in action, and it was built into a much more available flip..the 550.

ive watched this video for years as well as the pix, as even tho theres some detail imperfections it was way before colie's replica- and i like it. you also must know when these came out it was before seasons were released on dvd and barely anyone had the internet- much less a lot of reference material for sliders. and that alone makes this impressive. -in comparison to the functionality of the lightbenders circuit (which i do like).. the video above would be the closest (reconfiguration) as i mentioned, for those knowing how to do it.. contrary to Aaron (who i do like), but feel his videos and even messages may be a little drawn out for what little tangible info it covers.. but i hope aaron will continue his timer work (with help from his friend tom) and create a timer (with their names in it for some reason) (with help from his friend time), to create THEIR timer, which at the moment has 4 digits (with help from his friend tom)

lol, in short- nothing is impossible. i'd strongly recommend a talented reconfigure rather then trying to scratch build programs... this is for sure the closest weve came to achieving this mutual goal in years, and its exciting.. i cant wait to see whats up with the scarab.

best,
-Rebel (with help from his friend tom)
