Slave Leia Boots

Ummm...ask for an opinion and you shall have one.
The boots are passable, and the detail looks great. But the toes are far too rounded/blunt. The should have a much more prominant toe. Sorry, I just doen't like them. :unsure

Do you have any suggestions as to how I might make a version two? Have you come upon a specific shoe that would be a good base, or know how these could be scratch-built? These boots were the first time I've ever tried to make something like this, and so any kind of constructive criticism from more experienced costumers is appreciated.

Honestly, I've seen some pretty good copies that were store bought (at one time). If you do a search for suede botts on eBay, you may be surprised. It will take a little patience, but they come up pretty often.
BTW, I still think your Catwoman is spot on! :thumbsup

It's my experience that if you're wearing a Slave Leia costume, you could probably go barefoot and no one would notice.

What I've found with costumes is that capturing the essence of a character is just as important as having an exact 100% correct replica of the costume.

My Old Ben costume looks great when you see me in it, but if you took a photo of me and screen shot from the movie you could pick apart all the differences.

But, since I don't walk around with a life-sized photo of Obi-Wan stuck next to me, I look 'exactly' like the character in person.

i was just talking about that this past weekend, and i have to disagree.

honestly, there's a big difference between a cutie in a bikini and a good slave leia costume.

i've seen plenty of women who looked really (really REALLY) good in their metal bikinis, but just didn't look the part of leia at ALL.

i think the color of the material looks great. i do think the toes would look better being a little pointier. not trendy-stab-you-in-the-eye pointy, but a bit of a taper.

maybe just poke around at a discount shoe store for something that jumps out?

or, you know, tell the critics to bleep off and keep em if you love em :)

I agree. Slave Leia is the one SW costume I've seen that has the most obvious variations, and I wanted to try to get as close as possible with the colors I used.

I do love my boots because I learned so much making them and I'm so pleased with the way they look, especially since they ended up just as we imagined they would during the planning stage. Yeah, they're a little blunt-toed, but they're closer than the Battle Padmés I've seen in Pointy Stiletto boots. :rolleyes

I don't know if I'll re-make my boots anytime soon. It'll be hard to find another pair that matches the top better than the pigskin from the same hide, but I'm not ruling it out. But also, it's hard to find boots that aren't in style and are out of season. Killer pointy-toed, high-heeled shoes are in style, and even flat boots typically have more of a heel than the "screen-used" boots.

I'll totally agree with you about the Slave Leia costume.

At SDCC just 3 weeks ago, I helped with security and crowd control for the Slave Leia photoshoot at the GG life-size Jabba.

There were a few spot-on awesome Leia costumes (girls with both the costume and 'the look'), a 1 or 2 that were perfect costumes on a girl that didn't look like Carrie Fisher at all (too tall, wrong body shape, nice figure but not a pretty face..).

Most of the Leia's were so-so costumes on the 100% WRONG looking girl.

The Senator has both the figure and the face/hair for an awesome Carrie/Leia costume, and from her pics she pulls it off perfect.

With everything looking so 'ROTJ' for Senator, I don't think the toes on her boots will matter that much. If she didn't have 'the look', then the boots would only add the the list of mistakes.

from looking at that pic... yeah, i'd say you did a mighty fine job.

i was also checking out the BSG suits in dwrd's LJ. very nice as well :)
