I'm having a tough time finding pics of the Skull Island map from the recent King Kong movie...anyone know of a site or have some pics to share?

Here is a link to another thread area that was very helpful...I made a cleaned-up version of the map images provided by Darth Saber....

...and those original scans of the movie map that he kindly provided are located on this thread....

Thanks for the links Bryan. Nice work Ramsey... do you have any of your maps for sale?

I gave that first one (the one I trimmed too low) to my nephew who has just become a King Kong movie fan (in fact, the new one is the only version he's seen so far...told him he HAS to see the original...and if he's absolutely depserate to kill some time, see the 1976 version).
Although I'm happy with my 2nd version, I'm planning on trying another one, just to see how well it would work if I printed it on sketch paper instead of regular printing paper...should be a little thicker that way and make the sanding of the creases a bit less damaging.
As for selling...I don't plan on selling any, though I think I might, if I find the time, make up a few more just for trading and such. I really had no part in creating it...just took the scans and cleaned them up, printed them out...the only real effort on my part was the staining by hand work...so I wouldn't feel right about selling them...just a personal thing with me. *lol*
I'm my own worst critic when it comes to my replica work, and each time I feel I can always try to improve my work in another version...so you can almost bet that I'll be trying to find the time to make some more, sooner or later. *lol*

I completely understand your comment about being you're own worst critic...I have the same challenge. I'd try to do it myself if I had more skills working with inks...and a decent large format printer.

Please drop me a note if you ever decide to let one go.

One question...I'm curious about the type of paper that was used for the actual prop...was it printed on standard print sheet or some type of linen/cotton paper?

I've been wondering that myself...it does appear to be a relatively thick paper stock judging from some of the creases and wrinkles in the original scans, though in the movie it looks like thinner paper..and I base that just on how the wind blows on the paper as he's holding it over the rail of the ship, just as a breeze takes it away and drops it into the ocean.

I'm still going to give it a try on sketch paper stock...thicker, but not too thick. It if turns out looking even more accurate than my last one on plain paper, that will be how I'll do any others I make in the future.

Sorry, don't mean to butt in here, but I think that the one in the movie is some form of canvas.

I thought that too...and it just might be...but still seems a bit too thin in some shots.

Yep, I thought it was canvas at first too but following Ramsey's point, it appears thinner with a more paper-like quality in some scenes. My guess is it's probably some type of linen or heavy cotton-based paper. Sketch paper may have the right thickness but it doesn't fold very well.

Would be nice to find more reliable details on the actual prop. Anyone know the original designer?

The original maps (I believe there were 2 or 3 made for the film.) were done on paper (the one floating on the water might have been canvas though) . During midfilming Jackson wanted the shape of the island to be redesigned for a more menacing look ,so as an end result , sections of the original map were shown, and other sections from the updated map were also shown.
If you go to your local art store you can find very similar tan paper (it comes in large poster size, which can be cut down). It has the same embossed pattern on one side, just like the original prop.

The designer of the map was Daniel Pearl (He did the maps for LOTR films as well), might want to check out his website and drop him an email just to make sure it was actually done on paper.
