Signatures and props

So after reading the thread about the TRON disc and the fiasco that thread turned into, I got to wondering about the props that I have signed.

I have and would not buy a prop/poster that was signed. I just don't trust anyone.

All the props I have, I obtained the signature myself, except for the authentic MR signed plaques.

1) 2 George Lucas signed lightsabers
2) Back to the Future cast signed OUTATIME plate
3) F13 signed Jason Hockey mask signed by Kane Hodder
4) Jeremy Bulloch and Daniel Logan signed Boba Fett helmet
5) Jeremy Bulloch MR SE Boba Fett blaster
6) Carrie Fisher MR plaque
7) Nick Castle signed Halloween poster
8) Sylvester Stallone signed boxing gloves
9) Jon Favreau signed Iron Man 2 double sided poster from ILM

What I did was I made sure I took pics of everyone signing the items. I was unfortunately not able (forgot to) to get photos George signing my lightsabers, but I have pics of him signing other items at the event I meet him at along with the ticket to the event. Nor could I get a photo of Sylvester Stallone signing my gloves but again I have pics of the event and my ticket.

So what are peoples thoughts about this? Do you or would you buy a prop/poster with an autograph on it? What would you consider "proof"

PS: PLEASE DO NOT BRING THE ISSUES FROM THE TRON DISC THREAD IN HERE!!!!

Hey brad I wouldn't spend over $100 on an autograph unless it was graded by psa dna only.Unless there is picture proof like my Ralph Machio "All Valley Shirt"

I would lovesome signed BTTF stuff but like you say you can't trust anyone these days. I'm going to try and attend some events here in the UK this year if any of the films stars come over, but I can't se many of the ones I want coming over. It's a real shame because I I'd love some signed stuff I really would...

you forgot your claudia wells back to the future signed poster ;)

I wouldnt buy any props, books, or posters online...to easy for forgery....(i'm not counting limited editions lithos or prints)

I read several articles online that forgery is pretty high on ebay and to get a real authentic item is pretty slim....

I prefer getting things signed in person....take pictures of them signing..or take a picture with the actor....

I would never buy an autograph off of Ebay. Part of the fun for me, is going to conventions or meeting someone on the off chance in person for a signature. I just enjoy this more, and besides...I really do not get the signatures to sell them anyway, as I often get them personalized for my wife, son or myself.

I have met probably 6 times the ammount of actors/directors/artists/rockstars than I have autographs for.

Having dinner or a beer with someone whos work you admire is quite different than buying a signed picture off of Ebay.

It is cool when a friend brings you something signed cause you couldn't be there. That actually probably means more to me than getting something signed myself. God knows the only thing I hate more than asking someone for their auto is asking them for 3 or 4 autos for friends. LOL!

All that being said... what DO you people that buy autographs get from it? It's a collectable that you are gonna sell later?

I have a stack of autographs if you are paying crazy prices for them! LOL! To me the memories can't be bought or sold. But a 25cent glossy... for hundreds of dollars??? I would sell all of my autos! :lol

I only have one autograph from a band i saw but i do think about getting a few on ebay of famous actors. I only want them to accent other props though and don't care about collecting autographs. Like a Shatner signed Capt Kirk pic to put behind a communicator. A little extra so to speak.

Besides the MR SE's I have (Nimoy Phaser & Enterprise Bridge Crew), I have a few originals from Raiders of the Lost Ark & Last Crusade.

To cut a long story short, the above 2 were obtained through an industry-related friend of mine in the UK. I had sent Julian Glover (Donovan in LC) one of the Grail Knight Paintings I used to make, for his birthday.

Here he is holding one of my replicas

Since I also used to make Grail Cups, he also sent me this photo.

Personal dedication reads "To Alan - the keeper of the Grail - from Julian Glover "Walter Donovan"

I will treasure these forever :)

As to buying 'original' signatures on-line ?

Not on the hair of my chinny-chin-chin :lol !

ive never bought an autograph that wasnt in person (where you had to pay to get an item signed)

ive met loads of film and music stars, but i tend to only ask for autographs if i a)particularly admire them or a piece of their work or b)know ill never see them again. some 'stars' are still in touch so the autograph is worth nothing to me. kinda takes the novelty out of it when you work with them on something or are on friendly terms.

as for motivation, it depends on the star. sometimes i think oooh i could sell this on as a collectable, but to be honest i most only get autos that i particularly want. i have a signed boba fett bust which in all honesty i only got because the box lent itselt to being autographed and i thought it would look neat on my shelf. also its a memento of two really cool days with jeremy... as noted by someone else on this thread, having a beer and spending time with someone is worth more than a dash of pen.

id never get a prop signed. i think more often than not that signatures actually spoil the item. when tom savini autographed my dawn of the dead dvd i asked him to do it on the back, not slap across the front cover... he wasnt impressed haha!

Like most here I would never buy an auto off Ebay and I would have to be very certain of the source if buying a signed prop from prop maker (like MR) . All the auto I have I got signed in person so I know they are genuine but I would have alot of trouble selling them for much as I have on proof .

thats the case with alot of my autographs. then again, i dont intend to sell them. as long as I know theyre real, others can say what they like :)

After all, I would not like to have any props or costumes signed by some-one... Call me old-fashioned, but I don't like to have signatures on my stuff...

Signatures are on my autographs, and I can display 'em next to the props or something... Sure, I think on a cheap paper prop or things, which are easy to replace, its ok... But on a screenused prop or expensive replica?!? No, thanks...

Backside is ok, but not on the front... I like my props clean...

I have only signatures only on my autographs, thats ok...

1. Ghostbusters 2 Staff (Dan Aykroyd, Bill Murray, Harold Ramis, Ernie Hudson)
2. Ghostbusters Harold Ramis
3. Ghostbusters Ernie Hudson
4. Indiana Jones Harrison Ford
5. Indiana Jones Karen Allen
6. Indiana Jones Alison Doody
7. Star Wars George Lucas
8. Jurassic Park Staff (Sam Neill, Laura Dern, Richard Attenborough)
9. Lord of the Rings Staff (Elijah Wood, Sean Astin, Liv Tyler, Viggo Mortensen, Ian McKellen)
10. Pirates of the Caribbean Johnny Depp
11. Wanted Angelina Jolie
12. Titanic Kate Winslet
13. Kill Bill Uma Thurman
14. Back to the Future Christopher Lloyd

I buy only from trusted sellers, not the ebay stuff...
But I try to keep only the autographs from my favorite movies.

There were some actors on cons, where I could get a signation, but Im not interested in all the B-movie actors, and supporting actors...

And I think Im done with autographs. The only one is maybe a Schwarzenegger with Terminator scene and a Michael J. Fox with BTTF scene autograph. Maybe Bruce Willis in Die Hard, but hard to get...

As an autograph collector, and a prop collector for 20+ years I don't particularly care for having props signed as opposed to photos or paper. Just my preferance if the prop is authentic. A prop replica being singed I think is cool. I don't blast Ebay the way some do as I have found some obscure signatures for a great price. Of course I also had the same signatures verified through PSADNA etc. Never got burned yet, but that is because I am catious as hell when buying things.

Sounds like a great collection you have Brad!:thumbsup

For me, I only tend to get autographs for folks I've met and driven around. I help one local con with running folks to the airport and if they ride with me I try to get an signed pic from them just for the sake of having.

I must be pretty good at it some of them think I'm an actual car service. :lol

I 'v collected a few sigs and would do some homework before buying one. I have started to either take a pic with the celeb and the sig or a pic of the celeb signing it just as a proof of sig. my favorite sig is my John Carpenter sig you see in my Avatar its a Laserdisc from the Thing that says "David, you gotta be fu^%$%g kidding!John Carpenter"

Cool pic, too bad that kid i the back got in, whats he doing.....:lol

It was Mr. Glover's birthday party !! :lol

A family member I presume (?).

Point with my original post is that I am most happy to have this particular signature above all, because there is something 'special' (emotional) attached to it.

Personally Props signed are not my kind of thing.

As far as autographs go I really don't see any value of them so a fav Actor, Rock-star, fill in the blank signed this, big deal.

I collected them 20 years ago but I stopped.
