Sif - Thor 2011 :: Sword update 10/8

Re: Sif - Thor 2011

i just looked at that book today at the borders that's closing down! great concept art and lots of thor references, but not so much on sif - she's barely got a spread. had there been more on sif's design (not even her sword was in there!) we would have snatched it. but for $40, it wasn't worth it for only 1/2 of what we were looking for.... :-/ although once i get ACTUALLY working on it, i might have you scan and email me the sif spread anyway. :p

Re: Sif - Thor 2011

The official costume sword looks pretty accurate. I'd say just use one of those and maybe do a nice repaint and call it a day!

We made Sif's swords and shield for the movie- that sword looks VERY accurate.

We did single and double length swords as one piece, as well as one version that had two blades- one pivoted in the center of the handle and locked at the "double" length. They didn't really seem to show that action on-screen.

Also, two versions of the shield were made- one was scaled down. The smaller one was used when it was on her back, as the actress had a small frame. I don't recall the size, but I believe it was two inches shorter overall and scaled down proportionally.

Hope this helps! :ninja

Looks like you've got a good start so far. One thing I was disappointed with when watching the movie is that they ditched her signature helm...

Re: Sif - Thor 2011

gasp! are you plotting something!? i want in!

anyway. found out that the sif sword is not available in-store. BAH! sakura's revelation of the 28" length is a bit concerning - the movie version was easily 3ft. but part of the features of the sword is it shape-changes a bit. so the 28" might not be the end of the world. and my plans with it as the spear weapon, doubling it together, might reduce the effect of the undersizing. doesn't look bad with the girl in the photo, but she might be a petite 5' 2" girl for all we know and the size is relatively larger to her. *shrugs* i'm wishy-washy. i've found it for about $17 each online, so $36 for the two. if nothing else, i could get the two, determine if they'll work for me. If not, i can ship one off to whoever wants to use it and sculpt two up-scaled versions out of foam or whatever.

Any more opinions on this quandry? I'll possibly purchase them within the next two weeks or so.

Re: Sif - Thor 2011

I HAVE SWORDS.

And here is my review in two words: not horrible.

CIMG1123.JPG

Size: They're undersized, simply said. Best for smaller girls or kids. They've got about a 19" blade, which is decent, but the hilt is a bit small. Overall length is 27"

With a 24" ruler:

Held in my hand:

Each "grip" piece is about 3" long, so really not a good size for hands even remotely larger than mine. It's even not a good size for mine. ahh well. I also expected the grips to be round... and they're oval. I'm a bit torn on whether or not to fix/change this.

Copyright markings - these are just printed on, thankfully, so the paint job will cover that up all very nicely.

Bottom of the Hilt & Seam lines - casting seam lines are not that bad - easily hide able with a little dremel work or epoxy clay filling. I'll likely be using both methods.

My plan:

First off, they will need a repaint. It's not obvious right away, but the factory paint is rather... poor. Several blemishes, runs, smudges and the copyright marks are fine on a toy, but as a costume piece, it's kind of annoying. I'm going to try to figure out how to use the "chrome" paints i see in the spray paint aisle. if anyone has any tips on chroming for the blades, I'd love to hear them.

Concerning the size, I'm not going to worry. My plan hasn't actually ever been to use it as a sword by itself, and I'm going to make the double-sword spear weapon she carries. I *might* add some magic sculpt around the edges to give it a little more realistic edge, which will add a small bit to the tip as well (1/2" to 1") With the two put together, it makes a decent sized weapon. And, if I'm recalling my screen caps correctly, there is an additional piece between the two to lengthen it. Put together, I can easily get a 5'+ weapon out of them.

And that brings me to my next subject - the grips. Like I said earlier, they're ovoid, where i was expecting round. This isn't entirely bad, as it does fit in ones hand nicely. But to fit the pieces together, I was going to rig something out of PVC tubing, and now that would look strange if I had a round center grip as such. It wouldn't be too hard to build out the grips to round - a bit of foam and leathery wraps, but I'm afraid that it will not look proportional to the rest of the sword's designs, then. :/ My other option then is to build the center grip in the ovoid shape as well and try to match it and make it sturdy enough to hold. I'm guessing pink foam, a paper towel tube, glue and again the leathery wrap might be enough.... if anyone has suggestions on that front as well, I'll gladly take them.

I bought the two swords thinking it would be a decent alternative to sculpting the spearsword from scratch. As far as accuracy goes, I'm sacrificing quite a bit with this method and, unfortunately, not saving myself as much time as I was hoping with having to change the grip/hilts. A bit, yes, but for the sacrifice I would have liked more. :p I've attached two screen caps for further contemplation . :)

For the painting of the blades, why not try Aluminium tape? If thats too thick, then coat plastic blade with layer of good glue and carefully glue on aluminium foil?
Ive seen this done afew times with cosplay swords and it's very effective if done carefully.

I was looking up Thor costumes on here and I came across this one! I also really liked her costume and debated about doing it myself but realized she's not really a character I can pull off I don't think. How is this build going for you though? Did you get any more work done on the outfit part?

Sorry, I haven't gotten any more done with this yet... I had a couple of halloween commissions (and a costume for myself) to make and those took priority. :) BUT. While this still isn't the highest priority (need it for April 2012 and have others I need for Feb) I am more free to work on it.

Awesome! I'm thinking about doing Amora so it'll be cool to get some more Thor girl power going on!

I'm temporarily putting this costume on hold. :/ I'll still be making it, but due to timing and schedule and me need a few moments of respite, I'll be making a Black Widow costume instead for the con i'm going to and the Avengers premiere (which Sif isn't in). Sif is about 3x as much work with the armor, so I'll make it for halloween and things after that. :) That will give me more time to work on it and be able to do it as well as I'd like.
