Sif - Thor 2011 :: Sword update 10/8

I'm making a Sif costume from Thor, but my GODS is it hard to find reference photos. I've got a bootleg copy (horrid quality - not entirely sure why i botered) to get screen caps from. I saw it opening night and was enamored with her costume and have been slaving away at sourcing reference material other than the sh**** screen caps. Like, for instance, 7-11 cups!?

That said, I think i have a decent start on the design. I still can't figure out how to embed photos in this, so i've got them on flickr and thumbnailed below.

At this point, I need to reconsider my corset i think. i know for a fact she's wearing a corset, but what it looks like under the armor is disputable yet. I'm seeing the movie again tomorrow (may 14) to look at it in a more analytical POV than 'it's 12:01 am and i want to see Thor dammit' POV.

My main concern is that looking through my reference material, the collar and the corset (the stomach, anyway) are different colors. The corset is much more red than the more-brown collar. I like the scheme i came up with, and there's a good chance i might roll with it anyway, but I seek your opinions and a 2nd (maybe 3rd?) screening of the movie to more fully understand it. I want to get the corset part done by early june (for renfest....) so i can't really wait for the dvd/bluray to pick at it for right now.

I'll keep posting progress here as it comes along. I haven't seen anyone else go for this yet, so I appreciate any feedback!

Sorry the images aren't that great- they're just photos of my sketches. i plan on scanning them in at some point.

Also, my BF is planning on doing Thor for Starfest 2012 (in Denver) - I'll start another thread (he's not on RPF) once we get going on that to track progress and help others out! He's started growing his hair now. :)

Re: Sif - Thor 2011

Design round 2!

SifLayer1.jpg

Layer 1 - Tunic with chainmail, leggings, boots (why did they put her in heels!?)

SifLayer2.jpg

Layer 2 - Armored corset - will serve as structure for holding body armor in place

SifLayer3.jpg

Layer 3 - Armor & overskirt. Back of the armor still needs a bit of work. I have had a hard time getting good stills/screen caps of it, but it's not far off now....

Some of my reference material

I've started sourcing materials, now, too.

Tunic - I have a dark red/maroon knit.

Chainmail (on tunic & overskirt) - I found this gorgeous stuff http://www.whitinganddavis.com/Products_brass.htm, but it's a bit expensive. $116 for an 18x24 swatch, $250 min order. If anyone wants in on an order, let me know. heh.

Shoulder Chainmail - Silver nailhead studs on a sheer/mesh fabric. Woo bedazzler! haha.

Boots - i'll have to get black boots with the right heel (a low wedge with a heel) and build up the layers using leather (or faux leather? i tend to go for real leather...) I'm tempted to cheat a little and get boots that will be more comfortable than have the accurate heel. maybe. i'm also weird about SA.

Leggings - they're leathery, so i'm going to see if i can find a leathery stretch fabric to make them from. I don't really want real leather leggings. I've made those before and they don't stretch so they're never tight enough.

Corset - same fabric as the tunic? It's definitely much redder than I remembered the first time, so either a really burgundy leather or i use the tunic material as the top layer.

Re: Sif - Thor 2011

I sympathise with the lack of reference for this cool character, i pretty much found exactly the same images as you have!
If i find anything...like good screencaps, i'll let you know!

Re: Sif - Thor 2011

I am getting awesome ideas and help from this. I need to make a Lady Sif for my girlfriend to wear. I am currently working on a movie THOR costume for myself. Thanks!

Re: Sif - Thor 2011

Here is a link to the reference pictures i could find. One thing ive realised is when she isnt carrying her shield, she wears it on her back, so the shield curve conforms to her back. She can wear it over her armour and over her coat, so its always on the outside. (you can also see her 'action' boots which have a lower heel)

The only full length shot i can find of her, its not clear, but at least shows the boots (the 'glamour' version with higher heel)

Re: Sif - Thor 2011

I actually found a couple of pics last night of Kylie, her stunt double! Great full-length shots of the front. From these images, the exact details on how the stomacher portion of ensemble works elude me again, but it might just be styled differently (aka not a corset) for doing stunts? Any ideas? I like my idea of the corset under the armor which, in my design, will keep the armor from twisting too much due to the open stomach.

here's the article, i'll post the actual pics later tonight maybe. shows great colors and nice views of the boots! Alas, the back of her armor is still elusive....

also, sweet you found a full-length of the promo rendering. It looks a lot like concept art, because I don't remember her boots having that much of a heel at any point during the film - they always had that low wedge. And I agree on the shield - unfortunately for us on RPF, when we see her back best, it has the shield on it! :p Also it's hard to pick out references for the shield and sword in the film as it seems to change a lot. she can convert her shield to a double ended spear and back, change the length, her shield seems to have a sheath in it but when thor throws it down and you see the back, it doesn't.....

for the sword, i'm thinking i might make two copies, nearly identical. The hilts will be slightly different, though, in that they will have male & female ends and i can stick them together to create the spearstaff. :D

Re: Sif - Thor 2011

yeah, stunt costumes are always built primarily for the stuntperson to do what's needed. A corset would hinder alot of that. But i too prefer the corset look.

I like her spear weapon the most, so ill probably go that route along with the shield as a handheld item. Wonder if its held onto the back with magnets?

Re: Sif - Thor 2011

It certainly could be held on with magnets - having hooks would make things more difficult to get it off quickly and the hooks would catch her coat and the coat would cover hooks on the armor itself. in the movie, it's prolly held on with asgardian magic, but magnets work like 'magic' sometimes here in the mortal realm. :)

Re: Sif - Thor 2011

Woo pictures! Thanks for those. :D

I'm attempting to pack up and move, so Sif is on hold for a week or two... i'll do another set of sketches to update the boots/leggings/armor when i get a minute to breathe. :)

I plan on using 1/8" plastic and attacking it with a heat gun for the armor - i've never done this before, so any advice off hand for doing that i'll gladly take. i'll be researching various tips on that this summer. the arm bands will be more difficult, though - they've got a high polish to parts of it and are much more rounded.

the sword i haven't figured out how to do yet (shield will be the same method as the armor). maybe pink foam over a core and bondo? ideally i'd sculpt it and then make two identical casts for my spear, but i don't know if i'll have the time or money for that. :( i don't know how light i can make it using a cast, either. but i've done only resin casting so i'd have to look into lighter material.

The official costume sword looks pretty accurate. I'd say just use one of those and maybe do a nice repaint and call it a day!

Re: Sif - Thor 2011

thought about that, but i'm worried it will be undersized. i'll just have to wait until july to find out. :)

Re: Sif - Thor 2011

Heyo - haven't disappeared. I'm just short on costuming monies at the moment so progress is slow.

Anyway. Tried to go pick up a Sif sword today at Toys R Us (they came out sometime earlier this month) and they were sadly out and I have to wait until Thurs to see if they get any more in. I was hoping to hold it in my hand before I bought it to see if it would work ok. I think I mentioned somewhere earlier on the thread that I'd like to get 2 of them to make her spear weapon. I'll give a run-down opinion on that once I get one in-hand. If anyone beats me to it, that's fine too. :)

Also, more talk/discussion on how to approach the armor. I was originally thinking of plastic for durability and to get that actual metal armor look. Giving it a bit more thought, I think I'm going to use the classic EVA foam. I'm going to use a similar method to Graphic Jordan in his [thread=115447]Thor Build[/thread]. Sculpt the armor out of the foam, then either plastidip spray and do paint on top or paint then plastidip clear spray. I'm not sure how plastidip OVER painted will work. If anyone has experience in that, it'd be great. I'm just trying to get the shiny metallic look without worrying about the paint cracking and ruining the illusion if it bends.

I think i'm going to order from foamorder.com - bit cheaper pricing for 40" x 80" sheets, but shipping's a bit steeper - $20 for 3 rolls (will be using for other armor stuff too). ...then again, it's also a 40"+ long box.

And i've got the boots and black leather to put over them to make the layers and such. I cheated and got flat boots instead of the heels. MUCH more comfortable for longer wear and more practical.

And..... that's it for now. I'll post again as soon as I get my hands on a sword. :)

Re: Sif - Thor 2011

I seem to recall "the Art of Thor" book having great pictures of all the characters. If you still need it, I can scan it for you.
