Sideshow Golden Fertility Idol Review

If they had used glass eyes, I would have bought it.

It adds a good level of creep factor.

My Sideshow idol arrived and it's sitting in its box in the garage. I've got no immediate plans to open it up. I'm pretty happy with my Mk idol.

The Gobler looks to be the best sculpt but i like the SS plating. When i lived in Portugal their gold had a tint to it also. Something about the high carat count and what they mix in it . I don't know exactly, i'm into guns cars and props, not bling.

I broke down and ordered one tonight. While not 100% accurate it will fit in my collection very well seeing as I have no talent to make my own idol or have enough cash to buy a Gobler. I can't wait to get it in hand though, I'll post pictures when it arrives!

I gotta tell you, I don't know what all the fuss is about. So it's not 100% accurate, big deal. Unless and RPF member (and it has to be one who is REALLY into Indy props!) comes over, everyone who sees it in my collection will love it. I just got mine and I can not get over how heavy the darn thing is! It looks absolutely stunning! (y)thumbsup:thumbsup

In my un-ending study of commercial accuracy issues, I'm following this & many other threads with genuine interest.

Note: the expression on the idol's face (the result of passing an object the size of small watermelon) is Not actually a "frown", it's called a grimace.
(though it may more accurately resemble a frown - based on some of the reviews I've just read) :lol

That is exactly how I feel about it.

FJ, the only fuss is from people like me and Agent5 that see a company that EVERY chance to redeem themselves with this prop. Not only do these companies have access to the movie screen shots but I am sure they had access to the LF Archives.

If Sideshow put out a statement stating that they had no choice in the matter and that LF made them resculpt this, then I would buy that. But they are passing this off as a prop replica and it just isn't. It is a completely new sculpt based on the most innaccurate prop reference ever.

Because Sideshow had better access to cost effective ways to make this they could've easily made the "End-all Be-all Idol". Instead they made a "It's worth the money Idol"

I've got no dog in this fight seeing as I own one of those Ebay specials myself but having a straight mouth and plating done at the same place as the movie's was done is really not worth an extra $311 over the cost of the SS. For my money the SS seems to be a much better option.

I agree with that. While I won't pay 200$ for a not-so-accurate idol, I also won't pay 500$ for an idol which is a lot more accurate, but takes years until it's done and still doesn't have glass eyes. No offense, but I have yet to see the so-called "be-all, end-all golden idol".

That's why I'm happy with the blufive idol, it's cheap, hollow, and easily modified, because after all, this is a hobby, right? Where's the fun in buying a prop and putting it on a shelf? I'd rather do some work myself and be happy with my version of the idol. Indiana Jones didn't order it online either, remember? :p

Depends on the collector.

Right now the "be-all end-all idol" is the Gobler which is cthe same as the hero idol without the glass eyes, so it's more like the idol that Belloq holds up to the Hovitos.

In simple terms the "be-all end-all idol" would be a hollow, fiberglass Gobler idol with real glass eyes and RC servos that move the eyes. Until Jeff makes a fiberglass hollow idol, then we all we have as the best idol out there is the Gobler.

The way I see it is anyone who chooses the SS over the Gobler is just settling for less. One is obviously more accurate to what is seen in the film than the other. Are both nice? Sure. Can someone actually like the SS better than the Gobler? Absolutely since this is only a matter of personal opinion. What isn't a matter of opinion is which is more like the one from the film. I actually really like the SS idol but I already have a Gobler so there was just no need right now. I'll pick one up later to fill in the collection but when I get it it'll just sit in the box.

For me, it becomes the "law of diminishing returns."

Even if the Gobler Idol was readily available (which they're not) I still wouldn't pony up $500 for one when the SS Idol can be had for $200 with that fancy stand...:thumbsup

I know it's a very subjective thing, but at some point I fall into the "close enough" category...:)

As far as it being fun to actually finish and work on the prop myself, that always SOUNDS great, but then I end up with a huge stack of unfinished really cool props!...:lol

This is same as someone not wanting to pay $1500 for an Obi-Wan ANH saber made from real parts and would rahter but the MR version.

I understand completely as I would never pay $1500 for a real part OBi saber but I would and have paid $500 for a Gobler, actually I will soon own 3 Gobler's. :love

I think that's it right there! It's all up to what means most to the collector.
I have no problem spending 500.00 on a space helmet. A buddy of mine hears this and says, "You spent how much money on THAT?!" though he'll go out and spend that much to underlight his car which I would NEVER do.
If I was an uber Indy fan, it would mean more to me. Though I love collecting from the franchise, when it comes to Indy I fall in the "close enough" school of thought.
