Sideshow Golden Fertility Idol Review

I like it.

With that said, does anyone know any inside info as to why they wouldn't make it more accurate? I can how making it more family friendly might be a concern, but the mouth? Is this supposed to be based on the archives idol?

BTW, thanks JF for the pics and the review, it's much appreciated!

The Sideshow idol is nothing more than a common Ebay idol with a nice plating job, which many 'Sideshow freaks' are apparently worried about since Sideshow has had issues with it in the past. I've seen better idols on Ebay with the same plating. In other words Sideshow has given the fans absolutely nothing we couldn't have gotten ourselves here or elsewhere for the past decade. They even copied the inaccuracies of most of the idols you'd get on Ebay. Next to the mouth the worst is the base (not the base it sits on) of the idol, which as you can see in Brad's comparrion pics has been chopped off so it sits on the knees and too far forward. It also has the flat standard Ebay head. :rolleyes I just cannot believe LFL would allow this crap since it's whats been available to the fans for so long. What they've given us is a starter idol - one that newbies buy and sell later when they come across more money and a better version.

I agree. While it certainly does give us a new "source" for idols other than ebay, I would have expected something better from a licensed idol. This is basically an ebay idol (or worse) with a "licensed" price tag slapped on.

It's 200.00.
It's a lisenced piece.
It looks nice.
It has a kick-ass base and makes a wonerful display.
Limited to 1,500 pieces.
It's plated.
It will be worth a FORTUNE on the secondary market.
99% of anyone that sees it and holds it will love it.

Really?
It's not worth 200 bones? :confused

Yeah, it's 200.00.
It's licensed, but that doesn't make it more accurate.
It DOES look nice. So does FX Stormtrooper Armor...
The base is something that adds to the piece, but I'd still have expected more from the idol. It makes a great display, but I'd much rather have a Gobler idol on that base...
The plating and the base may make it worth 200 quids, but they could have plated a more accurate idol for the same price.
99% of the people like FX Stormtrooper armor too. But it still doesn't make it accurate.

Bottom line, great, an ebay idol for 200 bucks. Is it worth it? Probably yes, but what gets me is that for the same price, they could have produced an accurate idol based on the hero prop, plated and with the base. THEN I'd be blown away. But alas, that's exactly my problem with licensed props, most of the time, they're just "off"...

Nevertheless, if you don't have an idol yet, it still will look good on your bookshelf. It simply isn't that accurate.

Cheers!

I can understand the method of thinking by casual fans who think that despite all of it's inaccuracies it looks great and is worth the $200. However, is this the method of thinking that should occur at Sideshow or with those at LFL in control of the Indy license? Nomatter who is at fault they've been giving us this crap method of thinking for some time now. They almost always seem to fall short and use Lucas' mantra of 'it's good enough'.
Why even do this stuff if you're not dedictated and willing to see the job through to the best of your abilities, which also means doing a considerable amount of research? Why do it at all if you're not going to do it right?

Anyone thinking of ditching their idol, PM me. I'd like the idol and not the base. :)

There is no consideration, is just is, period. You don't have to be a genius or Indy aficionado to put this all together.

Sad. :thumbsdown

Thanks for the info! The idol has always been one that I knew I'd want a good copy of eventually but I've been slack about doing much research. I see what you're talking about though... I'll never understand why these places insist on coming out with an inferior replica when it really wouldn't be that much more difficult to just do it right to begin with.

So here's a question...

Would it be so bad to recast the base and sell just that? :love

Hmmmmmmm....

I read the review over on CoW, then followed the thread here on RPF with interest.
Let's face it LFL have reallyl let us Indy fans down. First the Noble Collection make the worst product selections, terribly executed and so poorly packaged. I mean come on why make a replica bullwhip when you can buy the real deal. Now we are presented with a nice looking, but sadly inaccurate replica that could so easily have been grade A.
So what is the deal with LFL? Just why do they allow this to happen?
Back in 2004 I headed up a product development team working on licensed product for Star Wars and I can tell you that the approvals dept at LFL were strict and pedantic to a fault.
We find ourselves in a time when unfortunately for fans it would seem that the LucasLicensing team will license, double license and triple license products that previously have been on the official "off limits" product list. What's next guys the Darth Invader vibrator?
Frankly they just don't care. I know this sounds like typical disgruntled fan spouting off on the forums, but it's true. Unless it's something related to The Clone Wars they just don't give a damn.
So poor old Indy is waaaayyyyy down on their priority list. The sad truth is they have consistently miss sold and miss managed this property.
Indy could be great for them if they approached it right. That means reduce your stupidly high license guarantee fees and bring a smaller vibrant company who's overheads are lower to make this license work. It'll never be Star Wars, but it could be so much more than what they have forced it into being.
And Sideshow... You're spending the tine making it wrong, it doesn't take that much longer to make it right!!!

Honestly, the deal is that this is a mass market licensed product for the casual fan who will not bat an eye at accuracy, or lack of.

For what it is, it looks real nice, kind of like the idol in the Star Wars to IJ book.

Not a product for the purist, unless they are very forgiving, but by the looks of it still pretty cool.

More intense fans will know and want better, of course.

The base does look nice, but I don't think any talk of recasting it is cool. This product is still on sale, from a licensed company, people!

If you want a base like that, buy an original on the secondary market or sculpt your own!

Easy there turbo. It was a joke.

The joke is that most fans would rather have the base than the idol.

It's cool - not intended to you directly - I know you were kidding around, but you can bet your bottom dollar someone does recast the base, and real soon!

Totally cool bro!

You know that will happen. It is funny that most of us would rather just have the base cause the idol sucks so much. :lol :lol

It's funny all the hardcore guys want the base which barely resembles anything you see on screen. The only real resemblance is that it is round with a protruding round section. The side detail is not accurate. It's way too thin and has floor tile on it. The Idol is closer looking to one of the screen used pieces than the base is to the screen used base.

I just want the base because it's cool and I understand that the vast majority of those who want the idol feel the same about it. The truth is a better job could have been done and it wasn't. Is it nice? Yes. is it as accurate as it could have been? No.
