Showoff ...Finished Spitfire Mk Vb

Just thought I'd toss up some pics of my latest warbird. This is another 1/32 Hasegawa that I built straight out of the box. I'd like to find a place or website where I could buy some resin replacement pieces to the 1/32 models ie. flaps, cockpits, wheels, decals etc. just for adding a custom touch. With this one I'm replicating the Barrie Clark painting as I plan on hanging the model in very close proximity to it with fishing line.....

I finished the final paintjob yesterday....I lost track of how many hours I've got into this baby so far. I still have to go back in to do the canopy supports, apply some washes and weathering and apply the decals, but it's real close to being done thus the showoff.

Enjoy the pics!

Re: Showoff ...WIP Spitfire Mk Vb

Beautiful work, love the flow of the camoflage. I love the idea of having the print with it, that always adds to the display of a model or prop IMO. Can't wait to see it finished!

Great work, DL :thumbsup

There isn't a lot available in the way of resin for the Spit. There's a cockpit (but with yours already sealed up, it probably won't help) and a lot of eduards photoetch for interior and exterior detailing.

Make sure to post pics when you're done.

And if you have any questions about where to get all kinds of AM stuff, feel free to PM me. I build all my birds with tons of AM stuff. My current P-61 has well over $100 in AM resin and PE.

I second the AM pieces, I've used them as well and they're very nicely done.

DL you've picked one of my favorite planes from WWII. I've even got that same Clark print from a signed series that he had put out a long time ago. looks great!!

Re: Showoff ...WIP Spitfire Mk Vb

Here's some shots of the Spitfire in its completed state. In the end I took the weathering pretty far. I was pouring over some old references and wanted a really torn up fighter look. One that has been through many battles....panel edges scratched to bare metal from maintenance, gun scorching,(since it's being displayed in flight), wear from pilots walking on the wing to enter/exit.

Warbird weathering is one of those dances where too much can ruin it....I took it pretty far with this one admittedly, but I still like it and hope you guys do to.:)

Nice job!!!

Your weathering was not overdone at all, many were way more weathered than this.

Your model looks great. Fine job on the weathering.:thumbsup

I am liking the 1\32 scale airplanes more and more. Most of what I have is in 1\48 scale. Reason for that is when assembled they can sit side by side and be approximate scale of one another. Just about all the bombers I have are in 1\48. Although I have a few is 1\72 scale like the b-36, ed-135 and the b-52. The bombers are so damn big in 1\48 that they take up so much room and I am not into hanging them from the ceiling.

Please forgive the little trip I just went on and I didn't mean to hijack your thread!:lol

Nice to see the old bird finished, DL44.

She looks like spit ;) :lol

Weathering looks good to me - not too much, not too little. I find the best way to do stuff like that is to pick a plane that has plenty of reference, and just copy it.

Thanks guys....this one was an experiment for me to use Future floor wax to seal it. I wasn't crazy about the results, so I went back over it with the Testors Dullcote. In the end I have so many different layers on it between paint&finish the panel lines are virtually gone. I always wanted to try it, but in the end, I think I applied it to heavy, thus the sheen I wasn't crazy about and needed to dull it down. I'd like to tackle another one of these someday.

Thanks for the kudos on the weathering, I was really getting nervous scratching the decals and the likes, but when I stepped back and checked some references it seemed OK.

When using Future floor wax, if you want a gloss coat, airbrush at about 8psi and make slow steady strokes. If you want a matte or satin sheen, hand brush it on and spray with either a matte or satin finish coat.

Just my experience with the stuff.

Great looking model, I always appreciate the old war birds especially in a larger scale. I'd ove to see you do one of the old 1/24 scale birds!

I just wanted to comment on weathering these machines. Planes that had seen a lot of action and wear have really lost a lot of paint. Here is a photograph of my grandfathers squadron, note the lancasters leading wing edges! I think it's safe to say that most of the leading/sharp edges of old fighter planes will have missing paint due to extreme air turbulence/stress etc etc. Exhaust scorching would be prevalent on the engine areas. Access areas/maintenance hatches, entry hatches, around canopies, would all have exhibited missing paint.

Wow...awesome picture! I love the old WWII pics...it was a time representing the zenith of the technology. The enormity of that plane is truely awesome..in any time period, but espcially that one.

I see what you mean about the amount of paint missing. That fortress must have seen a lot of action!

That's a Lancaster :)

617 Squadron are still flying - Tornado GR4's now. 617 were the 'Dambusters'. :)

Lovely build-up of the Spitfire :D - was that a Polish Squadron crate?

Very nice model. :thumbsup The miniature hobby community in my country swear by future floor wax for aircraft canopy. But it ran out of stock here for quite a while though.
