Should I wait before getting the Hobbit DVD?

Hey Folks, I have to admit right off the bat that after a decade give or take, I still only have the normal LotR trilogy movies on DVD. Not the extended editions. I wanted to get the re-releases that came out in 06, yet never got around to it. For movies like this, I'm a fan of behind the scenes and making of videos, production videos, trailers, deleted scenes, etc. Legolas and Gimli total up their kill count after helms deep, Faramir has a flashback about Boromir, the mouth of sauron, and several others I have yet to see. so, should I just wait until later down the road until there's a re-release of the Hobbit with loaded extras at a later date? As for the LotR films, what would you reccomend, as far as bonus content?

same here, with lord of the rings, i bought the regular dvds, the extended dvds, and then once i got a blu ray player, bought the extended blu rays as well, but since ive gotten a blu ray player, ive found myself only buying movies i LOVE, instead of just like.

i LOVE the hobbit, but ive seen it, MANY times, so im holding off until the extended edition comes out, because i dont NEED another version collecting dust that i KNOW i wont ever watch once ive got the extended version.

Just the thought of watching it on DVD kills me. Movies like that deserve Bluray. I think I will wait for the 6 movie set.

I'm holding off altogether. I'll rent it (since I didn't see it in theaters), but I'm waiting for the 6-film set, I think. Plus, I'll be curious to see if they edit the LOTR films further (there's some discussion of how Fellowship was changed for color-timing).

I am going to wait for the full blown set in a few years.. all six movies plus the billion hours of added scenes and extra features. I will rent until then

Oh my god, someone wants MORE content? Did they forget to put something in Tolkein wrote on the back of a placemat in the pub?

Extended edition of part 1 is due out this holiday season before part 2 hits theaters. Wait for that one or wait till all three are released in a box set.

I'm waiting for the extended blu release later this year.

For those of you waiting on the extended 6 film set in 4 years time...I admire your restraint, but I'll be damned if I'm waiting that long to see the extra scenes.

I'll purchase each extended edition as it's released (I think I'm being restrained in not buying the theatrical releases, but a previous poster was right - they'll just be dust-gatherers once the EE's are out).

I was thinking the same thing?

Wasn't the runtime a major fault of the film?

Why would people want it to be longer?

Based on what I have heard, the extra scenes are very trivial, like more interaction between dwarves and elves.

Where as extended Return of The King was quite good with Mouth of Sauron etc.

I think I might stick to the standard release with The Hobbit.

cayman, you do realize the stuff they added was regarding the necromancer in Dol Guldur, which was written by Tolkien and a fairly important story arc in the LOTR saga? If you simply didn't like the movie that's cool and certainly your prerogative, but to imply that the added scenes are trivial is more than a bit silly.

As for Shadow's comment about "why would people want it to be longer?" I enjoy seeing Peter Jackson's interpretation and presentation of Middle Earth. Sure, there are a few things here and there I would change and/or don't care for, but on the whole, I've enjoyed what he has to offer. And if I ever want to read Tolkien's versions, the books are sitting on my shelf, ready to be read again.

Incidentally, I picked up the Blu-Ray yesterday, and it looks spectacular. My wife and I had seen it once in theater (the standard, 24fps version) and I figured instead of paying $17 to see it a second time, I'd wait and pick up the Blu-Ray for the same price. This way we can watch it a few times over the next six months, then ask for the extended version for Christmas. Win-win. :)

I'm waiting for the "reasonable" cut. Where someone gets the 3 movies and cuts them back into one decent length movie, without the added videogame like running sequences and 10 minute dancing plates scenes.

and 10 minute dancing plates scenes.

Huh, seriously? That scene lasted maybe 45 seconds. I was actually delighted that some of the songs from the book were included in the film.

Also, I don't really see where all the confusion is coming from over why people would want more content. Usually, if you're a fan of something, you want more of it. (Not always, but usually.)

I love pizza, and I eat that stuff all the time. I'll never turn down pizza, even if I'm full, because chances are, I'll be hungry for more very soon.

Actually, that's a horrible analogy, but I think you all get what I'm trying to say.

The length really wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. I mean, my daughter sat through it and my 2 year old almost made it halfway through. Which is damn good for a live action film.

It's like a box of chocolates. You may not like chocolates, but maybe your kids do, and even if they don't, you can give them to your grandma with bad teeth.

I still kick myself for not making the time to go see it, I was hardcore into the books before the first 3 released. Shame I wasnt able to see it in 3d while in theaters, i heard it was amazing... then again I heard it was better in normal from a friend.. any suggestions there?

Well, I saw it twice in theaters, once in non-3D, and then in 3D. While I thought they did a great job with the 3D, I had a harder time following what was going on on-screen, especially during the faster paced sequences. Personally I preferred the non-3D, it was just easier on the eyes, and I feel that the 3D can sometimes be distracting.
