Sewing vinyl

Hey guys, I'm helping a friend fix her halloween costume, where she's an EXTREMELY cute friend, I really don't want to make an ass of myself. When it comes to sewing vinyl on a sewing machine is there anything special I need? I think I heard somewhere that I'd need a teflon foot.

Thanks

If you are using a house hold machine then a Teflon foot would be fine, or best is a walking foot. You can also sandwich the vinyl between two pieces of parchment so it doesn't stick (used this trick sewing clear vinyl).

Here is some great info on sewing vinyl.

In the past, with my old business, we had an industrial Singer and would sew thick automotive vinyl with polyester thread and a simple walking foot. (of course that machine could sew through a quarter, but that's besides the point)

I once sewed a huge vinyl coat, and now that I have one, I know a walking foot would have completely made my life easier at the time. So I'd recommend one of those, plus it has myriad other applications, so it's not just a single project investment.

Yeah I just have a kenmore sewing machine. I s'pose I'll be picking up a walking foot later on then. Thanks for the input guys

You "can" sew vinyl on an all stock machine, you just have to go slow and pay close attention to what it's doing. Go about as fast as you can say "stich, stich, stich, stich," aloud without rushing. It's a little slow, but if something starts to go wrong, you can catch it before it gets too bad. :)

I have a Husky Star sewing machine and a teflon foot worked great for me when i started sewing vinyl.

I have a Janome PSM from the 80s that is just merrily sewing through PVC quite happily. You only need a special foot/tissue etc. if you are top stitching or sewing through a single layer, i.e. that the pvc coating comes in contact with the machine.

And I am currently using Metrosene for the thread, a stretch stitch machine and a size 12 leather needle. Seems to be the best combo so far.
