Sealing A Sculpt

I've heard that people "seal" a sculpt before applying the plaster. Could I use this?

And do I have to let it dry before I apply the plaster or apply it while it's still wet?

Flat or Gloss would work the same. I would do a good 4-6 coats. It'll help the clay release from the mold easier.

So after you've removed it, how do you remove the Krylon from the clay to make it usable again?

I just mix the acrylic back it with the chavant. I have two separate piles, one with scrap clay(clay small bits of trash in it) and one with fresh clean clay. I try to use the scrap clay for most of the bulking up, Then I use the good clean stuff for the detail and smoothing. when I come across a little piece of trash while smoothing I just pop out the trash and keep going.


If your doing a bio or something you plan on running a silicone mold and casting resin, I recommend smooth on super seal for chavant. The superseal mixed great when reclaiming the clay(no trash) and when you go to demold your clay original it will release like a champ, most likely in one piece or large managable chunks. I've never acrylic sealed anything for a silicone mold.

I've only acrylic seal pieces for stone molding.

i scrape a fine layer off to get the krylon off. then that becomes trash. yes with each sculpt i lose some clay, but since i always melt mine in a crock pot, i don't want to jack it up by having a bunch of clear coat mixed in.

sometimes i didnt clear coat , mostly because i forgot to. but everything came out fine.

Dust the surface of the sculpture with a brush and some baby powder.

Makes the surface sort of 'gritty' without effecting details in the clay. The grit allows the watery plaster a little something to hold to. Makes the first detail coat easier.

Also, When mixing your plaster do not stir it or whip it. It adds air to the plaster. Simply mix it back and forth gently.

If I was you, goto stan winstons schoool, pay the 20$ to watch the How to Mold with Ultracal 30 Plaster. It is worth it. I picked up some many tricks from that video, including the tips above.

Clear coated chavant once, never again, it did not come out of the mould any easier, and it ruined the clay that was next to the plaster.

I have used hair spray in the past. surely with water based clay u could spray it with water to get it out if it has dryed up?
sorry got mixed up with a diff post about air drying clay.

Thanks, but I have gypsum plaster, not Ultra Cal 30. It was to expensive for shipping costs.

It helps a lot! And remember to use Pteroleum Jelly on the divining wall after the first half is done.

I sprayed my sculpt with a clear coat, helped quite a lot and also helped seal the clay, I did about 3 layers and then used Pteroleum jelly on top of that (use a blow dryer over that to help evenly spread it around in case it gets lumpy)

Someone suggested using black instead of clear so that you can peel it off the clay better when done I didn't do this but it's a good idea.

I used Hydrocal White plaster for my mold
