SDCC San Diego Comic Con 2011 : Sold Out

I'm a committee member with Comic-Con. First off, I have nothing to do with the registration department - but I do take notes and constructive criticism that I come across and bring it to the board, who then directs the registration people.

Secondly though - there is not a single person on the committee that is in favor of moving it from San Diego. Just setting that straight. Not gonna happen, for a variety of reasons.

But it's also not going to get any bigger til 2015, by design. We've maxxed out at 126,000 attendees, and we won't be expanding that number until there is both more exhibit space and more programming space. Having already expanded to have programming at the Hilton, Hyatt, Marriott, and Omni... there's basically the Hard Rock Hotel's convention space to expand into, and that's it.

ummm.... did anyone else check their CC accounts? There's no longer a charge on my account for my Con tickets, there was one yesterday for the full amount. There's other charges pending, but not from them.... are they delaying payment? Seems they would want the money upfront.

jeff, did you get a confirmation email????

they charged my credit card and i got my ticket confirmations today in email...leapfrog said they would email everything today

Is this the thread where people can start posting that they're excited?

.....or complaints.
I've never been to SDCC. As a matter of fact, I've NEVER been to a proper fanboy convention ever. Bummer.
I live in Lancaster PA so we don't have a whole lot going on here and I hate to travel, but one day I will make it out there.
I always hear negative things about SDCC. Always complaints about the long lines, the massive amount of people, not getting rooms, expense, etc....
It's those things that turn me off because those are the reasons why I havent gone to Six Flags in a few years - you spend 90% of your day waiting in lines, 5% enjoying the attractions and the other 5% is stressing about how much food costs!

Frosty I think think the closest cons to you would be Philly and if you're really into driving far Pittsburgh. Personally I like smaller cons, SDCC is just too big for my tastes. At least at the local ones the lines aren't that bad.

Frosty, SDCC is certainly a victim of its own success. However, I think it is a great an interesting show after you have been a couple of years and know how to navigate it. For me, I never wait in line, but that is because I don't go to the talks or buy the exclusives. I am there to meet friends, make business acquaintances and take pics of any screen used items that happen to be at the convention. For me, it is a blast!

I'm in and out like ducks mating now.
I go to see in person things to help me decide if it's something
I want to buy later. Maybe I find a deal or something rare or one of a kind.
Also prop auctions to see up close the real deals.

Fun to see some costumes too.

I look forward to it, but not like I used to so many years ago now.

For young folks who've never been, I am sure it can pretty cool and several days are needed.

SDCC is one of the highlights of my year!

My only complaint is that this year's ticketing bungle left me with only Thursday and Sunday tickets. :cry

I always hear negative things about SDCC.

The new generation of folks like to B**CH about everything so take it with a grain of salt!

It's very cool and well worth it in my opinion. I wish the complainers would stay home but unfortunately they all come back to complaint for another year! :lol

I'll complain about SDCC all day, but I still love going. Like Art said, it really is a victim of its own success. The sad part is, is that SDCC doesn't want to admit that. I don't mind, though.

I can't wait to see people I haven't seen in years at Con. It's always lots of fun.

I live just north of Philly and there actually is a bunch of cons pretty close. In Philly you have Wizard World, and a few smaller sci fi cons. In Cherry Hill you have Monster Mania (which is the best horror con in the country), you also have Chiller, twilight cons, True Blood con, and in NYC you have wizard world and Big apple con. Since you're in Lancaster, horrohound isnt too far away from you in Gettysburg and if you drive south a bit to Maryland theres another Monstermania.

I'm starting to get really excited, never been to this con before :] I just have so much to finish before then though...

Not me. I gave up on it 5 years ago simply because it's wayyyyy too crowded. i used to live for it - but that was back when they really wanted to connect with fans. Now it's nothing more than a sea of goatees and pony tails. It's not even filled with old fashioned "cool nerds" anymore - I'm talking about a chubby dude stuffed into a Star Trek Lives shirt. Two skinny dudes with big lips and gaping mouths giggling their asses off because they just scored a good deal (which are nowhere to be found there) on some comics. Those dudes knew how to party. Now it's filled with the irritating Neo-Nerd. Dudes who are convinced their face looks like Keanu because they're wearing an accurate Matrix trench coat. Ho-hum chicks who get their attention quota filled one weekend a year thanks to a sewing machine, a push up bra and a sea of dudes who don't mind looking like total creeps. The whole thing reminds me of any other summer blockbuster - you pay too much to do in and see a bunch of stuff that will seem a whole lot less important in a month.

Yep yep yep. It's another animal now.

I remember one year in the eighties seeing a 12 or so year old girl carrying this massive Bandai Godzilla figure. That was awesome!
Not a ton of girls were at this thing back then of any age, and this one was a G fan! A lot of older collectibles were offered by dealers years ago too.
That is all gone, it's all new stuff you can buy anywhere really.

I think a lot could be improved with some reforms today though.
It needs to re-invent itself. Reboot if you will. :p
There see, I support reboots! LOL

Seperation and spreading out of genres and attractions to more specific areas for ones interests would help.

Not just one big bucket that everything is poured into.
