SD Studios Star Trek TOS Medical Kit

I know that alot of people are just receiving their SD Studio's Star Trek TOS Medical Kits right now, and that there have been other similar posts, but I wanted to take a few minutes and do a review and share some photos.

I only recently expanded my circle of collecting to include TOS props. While I would like to think I know my props pretty well, I certainly have the least knowledge on TOS props. While I can look at any prop and immediately tell you whats quality or not, I am not the one who could pick TOS props apart for all their minute details and flaws. As always though, Steve did his homework, and I doubt that the most critical nitpick could get an argument to stick on this prop set. This medical kit is something I have wanted for a long time. And no, that wasn't a crack on Steve for taking a full year to come through with the set. Yes, these took a long time, but well worth the wait. Its clear that many of the delays were due to Steve's attention to detail, and blatant refusal to take the easy road at the expense of quality or accuracy. These replicas are of the highest quality. Its clear that they were a labor of love. And probably hate too... The aluminum construction gives these props a nice heft, and everything is clearly of the highest caliber fabrication and production. My only disappointment, if I am going to be completely candid, is that the leather pouch isn't too practical for actually holding the med kit. I do believe the pouch to be dead on to its screen used counterpart in size, and its a very high quality piece, its just a very tight fit if you put the items inside of it. Often when it was used on the show it was empty, unless the scene called for something specific. I have to admit though, just as a display base for the hypos, the pouch is well worth it. My only regret was not picking up the small pouch too. If anyone has an extra or is willing to trade theirs, I promise to make it well worth it for you!

On to the pictures... The first photo is a group shot with some of Gaston's dermal regenerators and scalpels, and Dennis's scanners. After that you can see the scanners again along with the SD Med set. The rest of the photos only feature Steve's props.

Got my set too! As it happens I am the guy who did the research and blueprints on this project, and I'm fairly happy with how it turned out too. :D

While it is true that the long pouch gets completely stuffed if you try to put everything in it (the spinny scanner, hypo, field reader, spray healer AND the vacutainer test tubes on the flap), keep in mind that it only appeared that way in one scene in one episode ("Plato's Stepchildren")

The rest of the time, the pouch seems to be either empty, or at most it holds only those items which DeForest Kelley needs in a particular scene. For example, here in "Amok Time" you can see that there are no test tubes stored inside the long flap, or even pockets to hold them

Probably the tubes were just gaffer taped into place for that one shot in "Plato's".

In this scene the pouch also looks mostly empty.

Here's mine packed with the items. It does actually close but you carefully place the items inside so they don't overlap too much.

Thanks guys!

I will be running a sale thread in the JY for the few spare hypos I have in-hand. So I hope I am able to sell them off!

Really nice work!

Steve, call ya later this week to work on that possible DS trade we were discussing. :love

Are there any shots of the "other" kit that looks like a....pistol holster....well kind of. I have made a few of these over the years for my own enjoyment and it is one of my favorites.

There's very little reference on the "short flap" pouch, even though that is the version that everybody has replicated for many years!

Presumably they all were using the one b&w photo from "The Making of Star Trek". But like all the other prop shots in that book, the background is dropped out, so that the outer contour is useless.

Heres the SDStudios short pouch, packed with props. Actually it's a bit handier than the long pouch, and easier to remove items from.

The short flap pouch only appears in a few of the early second season episodes, notably "Friday's Child"

Hi fellow Trekkie medics and docs,

Just wondering if this thing is still available and where can I find this little gem?

Long gone unless you find someone who wants to sell theirs and I Doubt that will happen! :lol
