Sculpting a face - visual clues.

I am using a styrofoam head for a statue project and it has some very prominent features. I know the face is unbelievably complex but are there some basic sculpting guidelines as to what different features.
Protruding chin = male?
Cheekbones?
Jawline?

I an not even sure what to ask. Our brain keys on certain things without thinking.

I´d say you should use something as a template, i.e. a picture/pictures of an actor that fits what you have in mind and then sculpt his/her features.
