Scratchbuilt 1/2222 Star Destroyer Avenger

Re: Scratchbuilt Star Destroyer 1/2222 scale

Thanks Chris Wyman, it's been almost a year, and my hands are still steady, hopefully they'll hold up:confused

I used to do models when I was much younger and I think I did alright. I remember my hands being rather steady. However, now that I've been in two motorcycle accidents, I don't think I could do the finite detailing I used to do that's required here, that's for sure!

Re: Scratchbuilt Star Destroyer 1/2222 scale

I'm sorry to hear about the accidents Chris.

Is it possible to actually use this hobby as therapy in a sort of way, working those hand muscles by crafting a model until over time some of the mobility comes back. Sure it won't be like before, but there might be improvements.

Never thought of it that way, that's a great point though. It's not so much a lack of mobility, but rather the inability to remain completely steady. I do suppose that practice could and would make perfect after a while though.

Re: Scratchbuilt Star Destroyer 1/2222 scale

The detail is just stunning.. I said it before, This is just great. I think I'll attempt something like this but it won't be nearly as "screen usable" as yours!!

Re: Scratchbuilt Star Destroyer 1/2222 scale

Thanks rotsman09, I don't think this baby will be "Screen Usable" but maybe "Shelf Displayable":lol

I'm almost finished a little side project for a fellow in Germany, once those are done, then I can get back to work.

Re: Scratchbuilt Star Destroyer 1/2222 scale

So impressive.. So when you're done, I'll need your services for a V mothership.. :lol

Re: Scratchbuilt Star Destroyer 1/2222 scale

Here's some images of the start of the details for the domes. I glued the domes to some pieces of rod,

I added some smaller rod and tappered the bottom half of the dome with some A+B epoxy putty,

some more details to the base

For the inner struts, I took the same approach as I did with the crane for the main hanger, I made a pattern and cut and glued the struts together on top of it.

Steady hands and a sharp eye. Holy cow I had forgotten about this, thank goodness I can now give you your truly deserved kudos. Those towers are almost unbelievable! I would be interested in seeing more of the process you used to create those little pieces of art. A star destroyer is something I thought I may be able to attempt a scratch but you are making me doubt that.

Re: Scratchbuilt Star Destroyer 1/2222 scale

Superb, absolutly superb mico detailing mate.

Jonathan

Thanks JoslinFX.... what the photos don't show are all the fumbels, flying bits of styrene, clenched fists and teeth:unsure

Thank you for those kind words Fett_Ish. I do have some pics on the previous page of this thread that show the construction of the domes, the struts went smoothly enough, but not as involved as the domes.

Thanks Garthok

I finished the struts for the starboard dome. *I'll finish off the rest of the details in the next couple days except for the spires on the top of each dome, I don't want to risk breaking them off during the build*

Re: Scratchbuilt Star Destroyer 1/2222 scale

Here's another update, I started working on the front face of the Tower. I wanted to put the bridge on her, yeah this isn't visibly shown until ROTJ during the final space battle, but I'm taking elements from everything connected to the Star Destroyer, whether it's from the larger Bridge Tower where the 32" Falcon was filmed on, to the illustrations in the Complete Cross Sections, and iscreen grabs of the hangers to the filming set of the Command Bridge.

I used this layout drawing from the Star Wars Technical Journal as a reference for the bridge, reducing the drawing to scale then using it as a template

I used a piece of clear acetate for the bridge and I glued styrene around it, I'll have an LED to light this. Later on, when it's ready for some paint, I'll take a fine brush and paint in the distinct "W" window frames as shown with the following pics

I also added the side coves with the windows.... as shown in this film pic

I took out another camera and shot some pics with it, maybe these will be a little better, here's the full shot of the build
