Scratch Built Studio Scale Snowspeeder FINISHED!!!

Re: Scratch Built Studio Scale Snowspeeder

Next I began cutting a crude frame out of sheet metal and metal framing brackets. I then bolted the body panels onto the brackets.

Re: Scratch Built Studio Scale Snowspeeder

As i stated, I am very limited in my resources and tools. Seriously, the only real tools I have are a dremmel and exacto.

Which made the end result all the more impressive. :thumbsup

Re: Scratch Built Studio Scale Snowspeeder

Next I mapped out where I wanted to have the panels removed and then cut them accordingly.

Re: Scratch Built Studio Scale Snowspeeder

Awesome, the best thing about this thread is that it shows that with a bit of clever thinking and minimal tools that you can achieve anything. It really is great to see this WIP and cant wait for more.

Its inspiring, and may well get people who haven't tried to get off their arse and have a go.

Keep em coming

Re: Scratch Built Studio Scale Snowspeeder

much appreciated guy! after seeing your work, your comments are very inspiring!

Re: Scratch Built Studio Scale Snowspeeder

Wow! Stellar work! In fact, it looks like YOU could teach US a thing or two!

Re: Scratch Built Studio Scale Snowspeeder

I then measured and cut the pieces to frame out the front cannon housings and also the engine/upper flap housing. i did more to one side before starting on the next because I wasn't sure how it would work. With this being my first scratch, I was taking baby steps, using trial and error to see what worked and what didn't.

Re: Scratch Built Studio Scale Snowspeeder

I appreciate the comment, though at this stage I highly doubt it!:lol

Re: Scratch Built Studio Scale Snowspeeder

I framed up the basic shape of the cockpit using styrene and a thick, sturdy piece of plastic (in blue) for the floor. Though I don't remember where i found that!

I included a couple pics of the build next to a partially built....or disassembled rather, ertl ss to give a size comparison.

Re: Scratch Built Studio Scale Snowspeeder

I cut out the frame pieces for the rear part of the cockpit. These later proved to be a little too high, and they would be trimmed later. One thing i did learn later in the build is the next time I will make the sides as one piece with the rest of the canopy seems how I didn't have any intention of having the cockpit open....Maybe on the V2! :love

Re: Scratch Built Studio Scale Snowspeeder

I then began laying in the detail on the front gun housings. This is something i wish i would have waited on doing until I layed in the cannons. I would have been easier to lay in the detail around the base of the cannon then the other way around because I had to trim away at some of the detail to make the base of the cannons fit. ooops! :confused

live n learn I guess!

p.s. sorry the pics bite! so does my camera!:angry

Also notice the detail is not accurate. I didn't have the correct pieces. :cry I just had to get creative. I did use some pieces of one of my many ertl at-st's.

Re: Scratch Built Studio Scale Snowspeeder

Next I measured and cut out the basic frame of the canopy, then taped them onto the body to check the fit. Like the rear pieces, the front was a little too high as you can see in the forward view. But they would also be trimmed down later.

Re: Scratch Built Studio Scale Snowspeeder

Great work Morsesith21!
If that is your first build... COOL(y)thumbsup
The shape looks realy nice and the detailing and painting too.
I love the pics of the building process, it's always fun to see them.
Keep it up!

Re: Scratch Built Studio Scale Snowspeeder

Nice job! It take balls to do the star destroyer as your second scratchbuild. Excellent!

Re: Scratch Built Studio Scale Snowspeeder

Thanks a lot punkpig pen and rodmart85, and many thanks to all who have left wonderful comments. You have all made me feel welcome!

I wanted to see how the detailing on the front gun housings would blend so I did a quick primer spray. I then cut the cover pieces, scribed the lines and added some detail. I then tested them again with primer. I think im a little unorthodox with my builds because I primer parts as I go to see if they work instead of just primering everything all at once in the end. :confused

does anyone else do that?

Again sorry bout pics. Im tryin to get a new camera.

FOUND ANOTHER DECENT PIC OF GUM HOUSING. ZIP TIES MAKE GREAT DETAIL BY THE WAY!!
