Hey, after seeing Andy Preston's fantastic JJ Concept ATAT materialise,

I went back to my early ideas to make my own version
I had been thinking about it over 4 years ago, you can see a sketch of it on the floor of my Joe Johnston Y-Wing WIP thread:

Based on Joe Johnston's sketch 0076:

I got back at it & rather than change my dimensions to what Andy envisioned, I pursued the train of thought I'd gone with in 2021:
using photoshop I altered the skew of the original sketch & went this direction

Again using my usual PVC 'Foamex' board to make the model, with a Tamiya Sherman M4A3 supplying the running gear

Using cast greeblies to fill in areas that are either service hatches that are missing or details tucked away in spaces

I made a wee 1/35 figure to stand at its controls, just sculpted on top of one of the Sherman soldiers

Just need to sculpt another one & paint/weather one of the tracks

Next one will be this tank:

Thanks for looking

So this was one of the early concepts before the walkers? I've watched and read so many 'making of' things over the years I dont quite recall everything now.

Really fantastic work, guys do amazing stuff with foam board.
Cheers,
Josh

Very cool.
Love the concept art builds.
Thanks division 6, me too, its about the only thing I get craving to build, especially Joe Johnston & Ralph McQuarrie stuff
I love it! Great work!

Thanks starks, Foamex is pretty sturdy stuff, perfect for doing model work like this

Yep, Gary Kurtz made a deal with the Norwegian Army to use their tanks for the snow battles in Finse,...the concept artists were tasked with creating 'costumes' for the tanks (I really have only seen Joe's drawings of ATAT tanks), thats why you see the main gun in all his sketches or in the model I made, a long 'snout' to hide the gun in

There's a section about this in the second episode of 'Light & Magic' on Disney+

Ahhh thanks, I did watch those. I clearly recall Joe talking about creating the Falcon but this part has slipped my mind. That must mean it's time for a rewatch! It was a great program, I'm a huge fan of the work of Phil Tippett so that was such a plus.

The idea of hiding the main gun inside a snout is very creative.
I look forward to your next tank!
Cheers,
Josh
