Score of my lifetime. SL ANH Vader face mask.

Check some FB Vader groups. There is a new ANH option offered to the public originating from a digital scan of the DJ helmet. The original DJ was directly pulled from the Rick Baker mold in 1990. That’s way cool.

Thanks...but I have no facebook. :(

Did the producer of these casts have some kind of rights to produce and sell them?

No as far as I know, no. So the contract bound by Thomas and the buyer would not hold in a court of law. It's there more for morality and to protect such a rare piece from recasting and copying.

This is the set that is currently being offered at Darth Vader Props on FB. This is the DJ helmet plus DJ armor (from ANH).

Unpainted here of course but you get the idea:

The morality of casting and selling something the seller had no rights to then demanding the buyers have a high level of ethics to not do something similar? Sounds like a way to remain the sole source of selling the casts.

I never understood the attitude that recasting without permission is bad except when the source has Lucasfilm lineage, then it is perfectly fine.

I share that exact same stance. Recasting is still recasting no matter what the source for the recast was. It's also all unlicensed as well.

I can see if someone worked hard on a piece and someone sells really poor copies. That is one thing but I just don't feel that recasting Lucasfilm's work is above all other recasters work. I love that these pieces are provided and will cherish them for the hard work put into providing them but at the end of the day it's still copying someone else's work.

Like for example. Ghost Host armor mold is off an original then Phil made a mold of that. All Phil is doing is making another generational copy of Brian Muir's armor sculpt. It's still Muir's sculpt that Ghost Host copied but just because Phil didn't copy it direct from the source does that make Ghost Host better then Phil in this particular regards?

To be clear, I'm not trying to dampen Vader45's or anyone else's excitement about owning one of these. I'm glad you were able to acquire something that has this much meaning to you.

I don't understand the super secrecy when it comes to details about a Vader helmet. It is just a prop from a movie. Plenty of details are easily available for other Star Wars props and nothing horrible has happened to devalue the authentic props.

A purchaser shouldn't be restricted from sharing photos or information about something they bought except in rare cases where there could be bad consequences. I understand that is part of the buyer agreement in this case. I just think it is pretty silly to guard this information so much. It isn't secrets to the meaning of life. It seems like a small group just want to be in on the secrets and exclude everyone else that are just as big of fans of the same thing. I'm glad the rest of the Star Wars community isn't like this.

Here here !

Q: If the buyers agreement precludes revealing 'tells' how does a prospective buyer know what he/she is buying is the real deal? given there is no 'public' reference. Surely once provenance of an item is established (ie. here it's how many & who owns them) then it's that which vouchsafes it & maintains it's value, as with any other high value item, be it antique or art work.

The point that seem to keep missing is that those who own source helmets ( meaning the original SL in this case) made a big investment and these helmets are not easily acquired. The fact that you are given the opportunity to own a copy of any of these original helmets is considered a privilege. The least you could do is comply with any conditions established by the owner of the original prop. You can either agree and follow the conditions of the purchase or break the rules, make a big deal of it so everyone can read about it and get yourself in the “do not sell to” list. Getting one of these the way Vader45 got his is not the norm and he was very fortunate and lucky to be able to buy it just like that. But that doesn’t mean the agreement doesn’t apply. If Thomas was still around he wouldn’t have approved of any of this and a lot guys are taking notice of this thread.

I will protect this piece and honor the agreement. I can understand why people are upset because the way it was sold(no exchange of agreement.) But this piece is safe with me and I'm sure Strider was ok with the sale since I have been on the Den since 2010 with no issues. I respect you guys, Thomas(outside of the bad transactions) and the validity of this piece. I wouldn't risk being ousted from the community I love so much.

BUT my opinion about the recasting still stands. It's the reality of the subject at hand. A bootleg is a bootleg no matter where it comes from.

This discussion shows plain as day the popularity Vader still has the in the prop community!

Wondering if anyone can clarify here. You say here that it’s from a digital scan, is that correct? Over on the SithLords 501st forums it was described as this:

Even more exciting is not only has DJ allowed me to personally mold and cast this set pulled from the Rick Baker molds, he has also allowed me to mold and offer the accompanying armor set which was taken from a DIRECT mold of the screen ANH armor.

Maybe I’m not reading it correctly, but it sounds like this means the DJ and the armor had molds made from them? Could that still mean they’re from digital scans? Thanks to anyone who can clarify.

Hello!! No, they are not digital scans. DJ head and DJ armor are from silicone castings/ molds.
