Schwarzenegger T3 laser scan bust paintup

There have been a fair number of paintups of these busts done in the past here on the RPF, but I finally got around to pulling my own copy from the the back of the cupboard and having a go myself.

This is of course the bust that was produced of Arnie for the deleted Sgt Candy scene in T3 made by laser scanning his head, so the detail is perfect - you can see every pore!

I brush painted this using a mixture of acrylics and enamels - lots of layers and motelling (I found that applying paint with your fingertip gives good results for skintones). Eyes are from GlassEyes.com which I compared with various photos of Arnold to match the correct colour.

I'm trying to go for more of a generic Arnie look rather than specifically from T3.

It's really hard to show the subtleness of the colour differences with the camera I have, so I've tried taking pics in varying light levels.

I've got a Chestnut Brown "gregory" wig ordered which I'm waiting for to arrive. Once it's here I'll work on fitting, cutting and styling it and using the offcuts to do his eyebrows. I'll post more pics when it's here. :thumbsup

it looks good but if i can give you some positive critique.?

there need to be more red on the cheeks, forehead and chin, you also need to put some red around the eyes and in and around the ears and a bit of blue around the eyes and on the lips too.

as it stands, its a great base tone but it looks alittle flat.

also, the iris on the eyes too a tad to big, smaller ones would add to the realism

again, this is positive stuff, please dont take it any other way

I think that you're struggling to get your camera to capture the color your applied properly - so it unfortunately appears as if he's a little washed out.
I do agree with some of fettster's points especially the eyes, but that said, your build is certainly looking terrific.

Dunno if this will help but if you look at this shot of mine, you will be able to study some of the color values Stan Winston put into Arn's skin and more specifically it gives you a really good idea of the actual color of Arnie's eyes and the relative size of the pupil and iris.

Great to see this in progress and I look forward to following your progress.

Cheers for sharing and best of luck

Thanks for the pointers - I'll look into those and see what I can do.

I had had the same thought on the eyes myself - the iris IS a bit too large. Iris size was not a choice when I ordered them though. Is there anywhere that I can get eyes that will allow me to specify iris size?

Encouraging to see you are receptive to feedback...

Sometimes our artists can be a little too senstive ("Hey man - I wasn't looking for criticsm!"), and other times follow-up posters can tend to over look that it is a "Done" project, and tips and critiques would no longer apply.

That being said...

If your eyes are not permanently fixed, I would replace them.

Not only about the iris, but they are far too blue. The color of the eyes in the large image posted KraamStar is dead on. In fact, in studying that image, I really can't tell if it is truly Arnold with appliances, or a sculpted bust.

On a reltated and intriguing note, I just watched True Lies this week (again!).

In the opening sequence, after he hijacks the computer in the dude's office, he uses a dental mirror to peek out the door. This is CLEARLY an insert shot, because the eye shown in the mirror image is blue, blue, blue... And Arnie's are not true blue. Possibly, the insert was Jimbo (Cameron) himself.

I would also agree on adding some red coloring in and around the eyelids.

Arnie's five-o-clock shadow is tough. In my experience with his films, he rarely shows a shadow. But if you haven't checked out Kindergarten Cop, you may want to. He wears nearly a full beard in the opening, and his beard is clearly reddish.

Skin tones are awesome. Camera protrayal on-line is a bear. Hard to show it for what it really is. Some or your shots make him look pale; others nicely tanned. All dependent on lighting.

Great work!

I know it sounds like a bit of a cop out, but I honestly think that the photos are throwing the colours off a lot. As you say, the skin looks very pale in a lot of shots, the eyes look very blue and the pink tones are virtually no existent. The last picture is the closest to the real skin tone, but even that is missing a great deal of reddish pink.

The eyes are just held in with massive amounts of blu-tac, so it's no problem swapping them out.

The eyes are not really as blue as they appear - the T3 pic that KramStaar posted is actually one that I used for reference when looking for an eye colour match. The eyes I've used look more like this (but the blue is even darker/greyer):

Unfortunately when I went to order eyes I discovered that GlassEyes.com (the place I've got great eyes from in the past) seems to have vastly reduced the range of eyes that they offer. There used to be pages and pages of different human eyes available (with different iris sizes), but now there's just a small selection.

I will definitely work on trying to get smaller, more accurate eyes.

Yep shows just how good the Winston work was/is.. That really was the most astonishing sculpt right down to the great hand-punched hair, lashes and brows to the tiny tinges of red around the eyes and nose.

In case you're interested, this is a slightly wider angle of the battle damaged figure, it was one of two that were kept after filming - the second was an undamaged figure and its jacket sleeve can be seen on the right.

Again - kudos on "rolling" with the feedback! :)

I totally agree on camera and demonstrating colors and details.

I'm certainly not the best bust painter out there, but the member who taught me very much is (many would agree). Coincidentally, he is also a master photographer. The combo of his painting skills and photo skills result in about the only true revelation of bust coloring and detail I've seen in digital photos.

Point being - I hear ya! I'd love to see your bust in person, becuase seeing what we see in the images, I can easily extrapolate, and it simply whets my appetite to see it in person!

On the eyes, think hazel. They are reading VERY blue in the photos, and I would think that is more the eyes themselves versus the camera or images (or even individual monitors).

Here is a sample of my friend's bust (done years ago). I have the same eyes in my T2 bust, and they match KraamStar's image perfectly. Sadly, I'm not sure where he got them. And I realize the image doesn't really show the color too well.

OK, so I added a bit more:

Reddish pink added to cheeks, chin, forehead, around eyes.
Blue/grey added around eyes.
Red added around corners of eyes and where the lips meet.

I also used a better camera (my fiances iPhone) and took photos by the skylight - this picks up the colours on the bust MUCH better.

Thoughts?

I'm looking into getting Van Dykes to do some custom eyes for me - I can't find ready made 26mm eyes with an 11mm iris anywhere. any other REALLY good shots of Arnold's eyes that they could use?

Nice job on the bust! :thumbsup
Really helped a lot with the red and blue-greyish details..

Found these high-res pics for reference, both for the eyes, and when you're going to add the eyebrows:
