3. I'm playing around with an alternative to just leaving slots above the eyes. In order to COMPLETELY fill the eyes with illumination, I must find another way to bring the outside view in. I thought of using a couple of old phone LCD screens with the phone camera lenses poking out of some convenient spots, but the problem is focusing on screens so close to your eyes. I fear it would probably do damage fairly quickly.


So, I thought perhaps playing around with mirrors to periscope it up from the gap in the mouth.


First, I practiced on some ordinary glass. (Top of image.)

4. Next, I cut some small mirrors.

5 & 6. I glued them onto some rods so I could adjust the angles inside.

I had to get someone else to wear it so I could photograph the eye through the mouth.

So, it works. I can see unimpeded in front of me clear as a bell. All I have to do now is refine it.

Only one concern, lcd screens and periscopes cause you to lose depth perception so you many be walking into people and things at conventions, that is unless you have spotters with you.

Yes I have. In my fibreglass build, I did exactly the same thing. Looks great from the outside but the problem is you can't see out of it. Daytime is ok but in low light, forget it.

Have you tried using a second colored lens? For my Star Lord build in using Risu's kit. It's a clear front with red LED lights and a blue lend closest to my eye to negate the red

I'm not going to go that way. Two narrow slots set away from your eyes is impedance enough to your vision, offering no peripheral whatsoever. Putting any kind of lens or lighting in front of that makes it even worse. No, I think clear mirrors is the way to go unless I can find some sort of electronic optic that is affordable and is OK to focus on so close to the eyes.

I've seen people try to use the internals for video glasses (e.g. http://www.ebay.com/itm/52-inch-Scr...921?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item234857d851) and a small camera mounted in the chin. Could be worth exploring...

Depends on you you set them up. You can have stereoscopic arrangements of mirrors so you can have a focal plane very similar to your own vision. It's all about adjusting the angles.

But yes, it will take some practice getting around in it nevertheless.

This evening's work.


1. Making the hinges for the helmet face plate.Aluminium struts with steel pivots to weld inside the helmet.

2. Hinge pivot gets welded into the end of the slot so the strut can swing up out of the helmet. Other end gets welded into the inside of the faceplate.

3. Hinges and struts welded in.

4. View showing the inside where the top hinge swing-arms (struts) are welded in.

5. Top two swing-arms done. Two to do on the bottom - offset parallelogram style.

It's fine. The top lip of the faceplate lines up with the top of the brow. In that picture the hinge is also not fully pushed back.

Wait until I get the bottom pair of struts on and then you'll see mate.

Hey SB what kind of template did you use for the helmet foam or paper? I'm trying to fabricate mk42 helmet from steel but finding foam template has too much 'bendy-ness' as I can't just bend the steel into where I want as you would foam is it a bit of trial and error?

This is a great solution! i boought them myself and are also easily powered by 2 coin batteries CR2032. So the complete lighting system is very small, compact and light!
And the mark 42/43 needs no fading so this is a lighting system done for about 20 Bucks!

Had fun today pulling apart some lovely little bright LED torches and resoldering longer wires on the COB to get the illuminated strip out of the main body.


Now I have two strips just the right size for the eyes and two neat little battery tubes to install in the suit for easy battery changes.

Funboy, I'm having a little break from the suit to do some work in the observatory. Shooting some deep space objects as well as the current comet Lovejoy in the sky. Also a bit of knife-smiting with my home-made forges.

Beast, I'm using Sharkhead7854-ironman-helmet-foam-unfold-by-JFcustom.pdo and Robo3687/JfCustom-modified for the rest of the suit.

JayC, yes, its'a cheap, elegant and effective lighting solution that well competes with daylight.
