SURPRISE SURPRISE SURPRISE...

I have the great honor of announcing a NEW X-Wing Kit remastered by Mike Salzo. :D

The NEW "Hero" X-Wing is the kit that everyone seems to have been waiting for in that its proportions are very different from the already awesome CC kit and its details are specific to the X-wing being built.

Using Mike's own wording..
1. Taller fuselage with the proton torpedo launchers moved up to the Red 5 position.
2. Bigger nose.
3. Taller/thicker Tail.
4. Cleaned up panel lines where appropriate
5. The Fuselage will have some additional details added where appropriate
6. The wings will now have the Red 5 engine insert details as well as some additional kit parts that are not on V1, courtesy of Steve N.
7. New Saturn V covers with panels for Red 5
8. Laser cannons without the details that run from the heat sink to the mount molded in.
9. There will be a handful of other details that I will be working on.

Mike has given Kuhn Global (me ;) ) the honor of building up and owning the first three kits. Thank you Mike. They will be reviewed thoroughly by me AND their builders so stay tuned to this thread. My intent is to have SIX of these beauties for Reds 1-6 in this styled kit.

Check it out...

Now,.. this doesn't mean Mike is going to discontinue selling the CC kit (since its measurements are taken DIRECTLY from an original pyro), but is offering this "HERO" kit as an alternative.

There ya have it people. No more fuss over the proportions. LOL

I am very much looking forward to receiving these.

Any word if upgrade parts can be sold seperate?

Second that. I have a Salzo X already, and would love to have the more accurate fuselage and other goodies.

I've been debating getting a second X-wing for a while, and having the new, Red 5 features clinches it. How can I order one?

Agreed... this thing is very kewl.

OK... good questions that I will have to get answers for tomorrow.

Mike is currently having problems posting on the RPF and there is a PM into one of the staff for assistance.

I know he doesn't want to be flooded with emails requesting orders yet. He wants to have it completely ready first.

I will let ya know in the morning....my morning time anyway. ;)

Looks very nice. Will be very interested in following this thread.

Would love to hear details of how the pattern for the new fuselage was constructed. For example, was it built up from scratch, or using the CC fuselage as a strating point and then "fleshed out?" Or maybe something else served as a base?

This could be the definitive SS X-Wing kit.

Here are some of the answers that Mike emailed to me this morning...

Hey Kurt, thanks, hopefully i will be able to post soon...Anyway here are some answers to the ?'s

As far as upgrade kits are concerned, i may offer a small upgrade kit for some of the additional parts, but with the exception of some of the smaller detail parts, the cockpit insert, and the rear engines, almost all the big parts (wings, nose, fuselage, tail etc) are new or altered and are not entirely interchangeable with the old kit. If i do offer some upgrades it will not be until a little bit later, and again it would be the small parts, mostly because if someone wanted a whole new fuselage and wings, that really comprises most of the labor and material that makes up a whole kit.

Anyone who is interested can email me at salzo1@aol.com to ask ?'s or be put on the interest list.
thanks
mike

What is the board name of the member having login issues?

Thats weird his user name is no longer listed in the member list. I know for a FACT he has posted here before. Very strange and I have been biting my tongue on this info for weeks. Glad he finally decided to make it public knowledge.

Are you involved with this project, beaz? Without wishing to sound too grouchy, this is still a long way from being what I would consider "definitive". I would have thought that you would have agreed.

The taller fuselage now appears to have an even more prominent downward dip towards the front - the CC kit always had this, but the ILM originals didn't. Some of the panel lines are still wrong, too.

The panels on the Saturn V engine halves are still much too thick. On the originals these panels were paper thin (and on the "hero" models, they were applied individually, rather than being part of the casting).

On every build-up of the CC kit that I've seen, it's very apparent that the cockpit canopy is a separate part. On the originals, the entire upper fuselage, including the canopy, was cast as one piece (no separate back end either, although most CC builders manage to hide that join adequately, so that's only an issue in terms of faithfully replicating the miniature, rather than appearance. On the other hand, the shape of the CC back end wasn't all that accurate, and its construction made modification difficult). A "definitive" SS X would address this.

The torpedo tubes may have been moved, but they still appear to be just recessed areas, rather than actual tubes, like the originals.

From the post about the "upgrade kit", it sounds as if the cockpit interior is unchanged (I may have misread this). This means that it's the Icons interior. The Icons interior is quite different from the original, and longer, too, so there are still problems with detail accuracy and dimensions, without even considering the "ethical" aspect of recasting.
