What X-Wing is this?

These are screen caps from an ILM documentary called "Light & Magic"

Based on stripes, it appears to be a "Red 6" but obviously the rest is painted much different than the infamous Red 6 pyro

Thats interesting. Guessing just a test, as it says, before all the models were fully completed. Something like that.
I'd imagine someone here, like Jason, would probably know.

I call this "The Other Red 6". It's the same ship as from the Bruce Logan photo that I've snipped into position here. That photo was first published in a 1977 Cinefantastique magazine and for the longest time was the only image I had of the Other Red 6. Compare the droid from here and the images above as well as the inside surface of the lower SB wing.

All the images in this thread so far are the same miniature. We're actually pretty well covered in terms of views, but I prefer the Red 6 that we see in more behind the scenes photos, including that of Grant McCune painting the dark red around the canopy.

So the above is the same mode as this? Seems like the canopy was already red before weathering but the pictures above seem to have some more refined weathering than the relatively unweathered below. Was it repainted "white" again and the stripes redone?

I suppose they could have repainted it white and restarted the entire process, but I very highly doubt that. It's not technically impossible, but it is a lot of work for no benefit. I believe there were simply 2 different Red 6 miniatures built for Ep IV.

ah, I totally misunderstood what you were suggesting earlier

Makes sense now.

Kind of like the two different Red 3 paint jobs of the hero and pyro, although I guess both of these Red 6's were technically pyros?
