S.S. Death Star?

Not to be out done...! ;)

3) The hemispheres were cut, and then built up with a slight straight edge just above the trench - it's demarcated by the white "band" around the equator.

Mike can you expand on this...? In pics I have of the original, it does look like a very thin strip of plastic may have been adhered above and below the equator.

"Thats no spacestation, thats a moon."

Couldn't it be a moon or planet used for fx shots? Some where probably mattes, but all of them?

It could be just some thing - who really knows what - that was hanging around in the model shop that was never really used for anything.

NOOOO!!!! Say it isn't so! There always must be some mystery and intrique behind anything at ILM! ;) Atually you're probably dead right!

Back on target - with some quick and crude calculations, I'm thinkin the height of the hemispheres was closer to 16.5", with the diameter of course bein the full 18".

Previous diminsions suggested in this thread have been 17" or 17.5".

The Death Star really begins looking like "The Football of Death" when you flip it on end.

This photo is entirely un-modified, except rotating it on end...

When you say "taken off the rear" what do you mean?

The back side is not painted, but there are only two other holes in the original model besides the main dish. One is dead center on the south pole for the support rod to go into. The other is just above that (think between Chile and Antarctica if it were the Earth), and is only about 6" across.

Tom, the back side of the deathstar I is just unpainted, but fully intact. No holes back there big enough for that dish. I could have sworn that Lorne Peterson mentioned they cut the hole out and flipped it. Obviously they'd need to add something behind it to fill the gaps.

Dave :)

Well they might have cut the hole where the dish actually goes then made a concave "dish" where the hole was cut by flipping the "scrap" piece and inserting it right back into its hole... I mean its the right size already right ;) If they cut it at an angle instead of perfectly square then it wouldn't need a backing and all they had to do then was greeblie up the dish and fill the seam around the edge.

Yeah- I'm excited!

I just re-read my thread started I over a year ago, and there was a a lot of anticipation and unintended teasing, and then I "back-burnered" the project.

But a deposit has been paid, so short of amy unforseen setbacks, I should have teh domes in a couple of weeks.

Good luck! I have been staring at mine for over 2 years now. Its been a leap of faith making every cut. Have we determined the diameter and distance from the trench of the super laser?
