S.S. Death Star?

Thanks Rob!

Kurt did you ever get what you need in this respect?

Sure did Rob! Thank you for asking my friend! We could certainly always use more! LOLOLOLOLOL

That stated... Matt Meyer will be starting this beastie build January 1, 2009... followed closely after by the SS DS II. We only have three major builds scheduled for 2009 and I wanted those to be the first two (especially after two years of my squaking about doing it! LOLOLOLOLOL). I figured I'd better stop just talkin' the talk and instead start walkin' the walk. ;) LOLOLOLOL... Matt is looking forward to it. :)

How about you? Will you be working on yours soon?

BTW... while all you guys are having fun at WF, please take lots of photos. :) I will be away at a conference during this time. :( You all have a GREAT time! :D And don't forget to watch Gene K.'s Galactica presentation while there! I understand it is going to be quite something! :D

So the guys got something that belonged to Lucas and decided to return it by selling it to him? I can just imagine the kind of price they were asking if he turned it down. :lol

Once belonged to Lucas, then abandoned and even denied more than once. And according to the story their asking price was a counter offer to a rather small proposal from LFL. ;)

I just saw the model in person at the Seattle SF museum- pretty awesome in person. I love how you can press the button to light it up and the music plays.

Doubtful. As I understand it, LFL asked if it could be returned for free. Otherwise they were uninterested.

Here's an odd, but related question - what did ILM use for the Deathstar when they worked on STAR TOURS for Disneyland?

I was there just this weekend, and as I'm being rocked around by this thing, I wondered - what model did they shoot? By this time (1986-ish), wasn't the original in Gus's hands?

Just another hmmmmm....

Gene

It came into Gus's hands less than 9 years ago.

Little bit more "research" discussion...

Take a look at these photos. The main image was posted by one of our reknown studio-scalers awhile back. In studying the pics, I've come to some conclusions I wanted to bounce off you all... Most of what I have to offer is either 1.) easy to figure our or 2.) already figured out; but hey - I'm old and slow! ;)

Painted silver as a base coat that would show on the inside of the clear acrylic to enhance reflectivity? Yes? No...?

For the longest time. this clear plastic part eluded me, then it dawned on me - the tool used to ensure all the "cityscapes" are parallel and match the correct longitudinal lines. Much like the "shoe" Lasse fabricated for his half-scale version. True...?

It looks like the dish was initially affixed flush with the surface with no protrusions; no gaps. Though Moe's fine replica (which is on the original) protrudes past the surface a bit, creating a lip, and it has gaps. PLUS there are shots of the finished original that look similar in structure as to Moe's. So what were the steps; what was the process in creating the original dish?

Finally, WHAT is that brown hemisphere, and what did ILM use it for?

They might've vacformed a sheet of styrene over one of the hemis (or that brown one in the background) to use to make the dish.

I heard once the dish was just the part left over from cutting the hole for it, flipped over, but seems to me you couldn't get that flush due to material lost in the cutting.

That could be the buck for those dopey R3 droids?

Awesome thread. I have GOT to get to bed!

I don't think the brown thing is big enough for the DS. IT looks like a Tie wing part next to it.

Agreed on this, Jay. I think it was in the SAG book that Lorne Peterson mentions they flipped the removed portion over. But I agree - I wouldn't think it'd fit flush. Unless they used a filler of sorts, but that seems doubtful.

Would you guys agree that the clear plastic item is a guide for the painting of the cityscapes?

I can't remember if anyone if anyone posted any photos of the back side of the Deathstar. Here's one from the Sci-Fi. Many Bothan spies died to bring post this picture here, so use it well. Or make a model. Whatever.
