"S" of SUPERMAN

There were similar comments about the '89 Batman symbol that the producers or something couldn't tell it was the Batman symbol, as they keyed in on the gold rather than the black.

By all accounts the Siegel & Shuster version the crest simply meant 'S' for Superman. Forty years later Richard Donner asked the question of what the crest was and why it was there and thought to give it some relevance - So Donner & Mankiewicz need to be credited with making it the family crest. The comics and many interpretations since then have adopted this reasoning.

And those captures showing Jor-El's demise are an absolute revalation - after thirty years there's always something new to discover...

Last iteration I heard was that it was the Kryptonian symbol for hope. Which, I suppose, could also be the El family crest. No reason the two are mutually exclusive.
