Rubber armour plates- What rubber is best ?

HI-
I'd be grateful for any advice from costumers over using semi rigid rubber for some armour I'm making.
I need to colour it with a metal finish, and it needs to be thixotropic based so I can brush it into an open silicone mold.
When cured it needs to be pretty tough- with a good shear strength and a basic rigidity of roughly 80 % (if 100% is non bendy !).
Its going to be external armour, rather than something bendy like the under suit for Iron man, if this is a good example of what I'm after.

I am guessing Smooth-on is the way forward but I haven't had much experience using their rubbers ? UK availability if poss?

many thanks,

D

Example? Is there a picture? I can't tell, due to work filters. If there is a picture of the Riddick armor, then I will look foolish, but that sounds like what you are describing.

I heard that it was "truck-bed liner" material that was sprayed into a mold. I don't know if that is true or not. My other suggestion is a 60 shore urethane with a thixotropic additive and brush it into the mold.

Well there was no photos but you are spot on with your guess for the type of thing I am looking for- and wow, thats pretty good advice ! Many thanks ;-)

you want a shore 60 urethane, load it will alu powder which will make it look like metal and make it thixtropic at the same time.

either bentley chemicals or mouldlife sell it, i have used both smooth on (Bentleys) or polytek (mouldlife)rubbers, both are great and will do the job.

also you can increase the tear strength but laminating cheesecloth in between layers

Would it be the same urethane as these guys used : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qHKFPh3RTXY ?
