Royal Guard - The Force Unleashed

Recently had a go at modeling Palpatine's Royal Guard and was wondering if anyone could give me a hand in figuring out the dimensions of the helmet. Just need the lengths of A, B and C.

Edit: Will be going for the Royal Guard look from TFU, many thanks to Jonah!

Re: Royal Guard Helmet Dimensions?

The avontail -- the drapey bit that rests on the shoulders -- is much more abbreviated on the Prequel version. I'll post comparison pics tomorrow if you need reference.

That would be great! It seems like I'd be going for the prequel version since my model looks like they are much shorter.

Re: Royal Guard Helmet Dimensions?

Okay, I misspoke -- sorta -- out of too many years since I was more actively researching all this for my own purposes. When I say "Prequel" I apparently really mean "Revenge of the Sith". *heh* Here are the three versions we've gotten -- real-world chronologically...

Good shots that show front and back of the original helmet from Return of the Jedi, the first a costume test photo, the second a scan of a film frame:

Then, in Attack of the Clones, we only saw them briefly in Palpatine's office, and only really from the front, but the helmets actually look the same. Not sure if they re-used the originals or not... This shot is from the Visual Dictionary, and you can compare the avontail to the one on the Senate Guard helmet, next to him:

Which is relevant, because for Revenge of the Sith, they made new helmets with that same Senate Guard-style abbreviated avontail. Here's a costume test photo showing front and back:

Which is what it looks like you're doing. I'll get those measurements in the morning. For C, do you want it at that angle? Or straight front-to-back parallel with the top edge of the visor? Either way, my dimensions will be approximate. I have the wonderfully-accurate, copied-directly-from-an-original, I'm-amazed-they-got-it-so-dead-on Rubies Supreme Edition ROTJ (and AOTC) helmet, and I've modded a pretty accurate fan-made ROTJ style to the ROTS style, from photo reference. But no one's done an authorized, recreated-from-an-original-prop version of the ROTS Guard helmet, so take my measurements with a grain of salt. Also, this costume test photo from ROTJ shows the helmet in perfect profile, so you can see the front-to-back "flare" isn't as pronounced as in your model as it is now -- even with the avontail trimmed up at sides and back:

Hope this all helps while I get some numbers for you to plug in...

Re: Royal Guard Helmet Dimensions?

Wow those are great photos! For C it would be at that peculiar angle, not parallel to the visor.

This is what I was using as reference actually..

I guess I won't go for screen accuracy this time around, we'll see how the numbers plug in and how far off the mark I was.

Re: Royal Guard Helmet Dimensions?

Just to be clear, how do you measure line A?
- at 90° from line C? (helmet on a table)
- height from the front tip? (height of helmet on helmet stand minus height of front tip from base)

Re: Royal Guard Helmet Dimensions?

Front tip..sorry I see how that would be a little wonky to figure out what I meant. Basically just wanted the overall height from the lowest point of the helmet to the highest point (if it were being worn)

Re: Royal Guard Helmet Dimensions?

So this is not precise. That's going to take a bit longer. But what I took on the fly today was:

A: ~17.5"
B: ~12.5" (I've been conservative with my trimming. Can always take more off -- much harder to add back on. Vould conceivably take off another inch or more. This is the most malleable of the measurements I give you.)
C: ~11.5"

That should get you started. :)

Re: Royal Guard Helmet Dimensions?

Thanks Jonah, that's perfect! My model is surprisingly close to those numbers :) I'm going to start printing it now.

Re: Royal Guard Helmet Dimensions?

I'll also supply you with this reference, now I know you're doing the Force Unleashed version (which is essentially the ROTS version):

mperors_Royal_Guard_Concept_Art%20pane_zpsmmtbfhfn.png

Use that and the front-and-back ROTS costume test photo as prime reference. The profile should be more vertical. The back drape, in particular, drops straight down from the back band, before flaring rearward only a few inches before the bottom, and then only slightly. The drop, on this version, from the sides, where the helmet rests on the shoulders, to the center back is only about an inch and a half. In front, the angle where the "face veil" meets the lower bit that rests on the chest is much shallower (the ROTJ profile shot is handy for seeing this, and that profile remains unaltered throughout, even as the avontail gets trimmed up). While your "C" may be close to mine, it should be a steeper angle, with the back drape ending higher and the front drape being brought in and ending lower. As you have your model now, it's going to have a lot of air under either the back drape, chest drape, or both. The depth to width ratio seems off.

I was going to take a few more useful measurements this afternoon/evening, mainly the depth to width ratio of the main helmet barrel, the vertical height and thickness of the brow band, and the vertical height and depth of the back band, as well as where it sits relative to the visor opening.

Re: Shadow Guard Helmet - The Force Unleashed

Posting some pics of the printed out helmet. I must say this definitely beat doing it in Pepakura which I have tried once before. What a symmetry nightmare that was..

Will be filling in the seam lines with bondo and sanding the whole thing smooth soon.

I have the wonderfully-accurate, copied-directly-from-an-original, I'm-amazed-they-got-it-so-dead-on Rubies Supreme Edition ROTJ (and AOTC) helmet

Is this the same as the Rubies Supreme they still offer, or have they changed it? I'd love to get a Royal Guard helmet.

Printed out the chest armor, a pauldron and the shin/boot armor. Going to make casts of these instead of printing them out again.

Re: Royal Guard Helmet - The Force Unleashed

So... You say you're going to be moulding those parts, hm...? *steeples fingers thoughtfully*

Re: Royal Guard Helmet - The Force Unleashed

Mhm, are you only interested in the shin and pauldron? Right now those are the only parts (plus the helmet since bondo is making it heavier than I'd like) that I'm casting.
