3D model fits this one nicely as well. The holes in the base are exactly the same (same cast as the other one) only slightly rotated relative to the other prop. So I don't think the tube and the skirt were fixed in the same place which either means that the always rotated or that they are not two parts that originally belonged together.

I did some looking when they were first mentioned and have to agree that the similarities are highly suspicious. Form follows function and there is a lot in common here.

Steering column collar/hub from a 64-65 Mustang:

So what type of vehicle would have a plastic steering column collar/hub? Or if not a steering column, something that would serve a similar function? Something to support a rotating wheel/handwheel with a limited range of motion, and holes to pass wires through.
 
I had a theory about the orange plastic of the main piece.

lonepigeon says that it was common place to buy up scrap parts from industry such as Volvo. Let’s assume for a moment that the part I question is a car part. Does anyone know if companies run tests on their new plastic parts by using colors that stand out? I was thinking of how this is done with action figures.

If they did such a thing, it would explain why they were scrap and might also explain why we are having a hard time finding it. What if the actual part that went into production was something common like black?
 
I looked for an hour or two this morning (steering columns, steering housings, steering turn signal housings, steering column shift housing) and while I did see examples that resemble the mine no exact matches.

I did notice steering assemblies from the 50s and 60s looked more like the prop. Those earlier year steering columns were straight cylinders with holes or cut-outs for the turn signal arm or gear shifter. By the 70s the housings had integrated branches/boxes on the sides for the drive key assembly and function levers.

Aftermarket auto parts like plastic housings were cheap surplus in those days, just like the Volvo dash panels.

Yes, there are many OEM factories for car parts for many different brands. This could be a car part like that.
 
My dad worked with injection molding machines for GM since the 80s (retired now) and I asked him about the steering column idea and plastic color. He said it looks somewhat like one and that there is a chance they might have used a bright plastic for test shots. He said that big companies have this stuff down pretty well so they probably would have just used whatever colors they normally used and just corrected things as they went. There's always the possibility they might have used a highvis color for a test or he said it could have been a common color for a certain company or was painted/overcoated with vinyl. Then within that I got a lengthy, somewhat unnecessary, lesson on exactly how they correct test shots... :lol:
 
This “steering column” could also be a plastic part that slides into the column itself no? The plastic piece houses the clock spring, wiper and direction controls

I only ask because I spent my childhood stripping mustangs in my dads speed shop, which lead me to learn how to fix clock springs

I’ve taken apart many steering wheels to change clock springs and I’ve seen all different kinds of colors inside

Last Chrysler I did was all green inside, when the steering column was black outside

I’m just trying to understand, that you guys think this is a internal part right? If it’s internal I don’t think the orange color matters?

I think I’m missing something, sorry for the confusion.
