Rotating archived threads

Hey, I just thought of this......let's see who else thinks it is a good idea.

Archived threads tend to get buried and lost, for the most part. Yes, I know, people can be lazy and not look them up in the first place, but....that is how many people are, let's face it.

My very first archived thread about metal lathes is still the first one showing. I think it would be cool if you guys in the administration could set it up so that (just tossing a time frame out) every 14 days, it could revolve. That way, NO thread in the archives would be buried.

There is some very invaluable information stored there that I'll bet many people haven't even read.

Just my thoughts. Thank you for reading.

The archive is for reference, much like a library. When you go to the library, you search for a specific book. The search function still works here, too.

The fact is, people on here are so lazy, they don't do their homework first, and many times don't even read before posting. It's easier to make a new thread, retreading the same ground for the millionth time.

There are only eight archived threads! Wtf happened to all the archives from the last few incarnations of the RPF?

There must be a problem on your end; I see 123 threads with 14,995 posts.

Yeah, indeed, Scarf....I see what he is seeing, as well.

Again, I am merely suggesting this due to the fact that people are lazy, or maybe don't think first to go to the Archives.

A way to "resurrect" that forum, and keep it interesting, would be to rotate threads on a bi-monthly basis, in my opinion.

The last time I checked, most of the older archive threads were missing all the posts due to some snafu with the last move.:unsure

Double checked some random threads on pages 5-7 (all with threads "authored" by "Migrate")--zilch....

Seems like a good idea :thumbsup also would it be possible for the RPF to host the images in threads they archive so we don't end up with page upon page of boxes with red x's in ?
Be a good idea to just delete the threads like mentioned in the above post that are dead.

It just occured to me - is it being suggested to clean out and organize the Archive? That's not a bad idea. Or is it meant by 'rotate' that things that used to be on page 3 are now moved to page 1? If that's the case, what does that accomplish? It's still the exact same information, just in a different order. Has it come to this? RPF members can no longer read past page one??

Who just casually browses the archives for random information?? Does the search function no longer work?

Hey, neat idea...some sort of "Archive Thread of the Month". I'll see what we can do.

A couple of servers ago, Yodaman patiently went through them and saved a lot of the pics to the RPF server. Then we moved and a lot of his work (and that of the original thread authors, of course) was lost. We found an automated solution that fixed a bunch of the links with our last software but have not found one to use with the current one. In theory, the pics moved with us but somehow the addresses changed so the links don't work.

And then there are those threads that contain zero posts. I've been coming across those elsewhere on the forum. Sucks. :(

We'll spruce it up as we can, but it is slow and meticulous work.

What about a MEMBER of the MONTH.

Can you nominate yourself?

I second that motion!!!!!

Hey Treadwell,

Anything ever come of this discussion with the other mods?
