Ronan the Accuser build

So after watching Guardians like 3 times in the theaters, I decided to do Ronan as my next project. I am using the film for reference, as well as the empire magazine cover image and the digital concept image. At the time of this post I am almost completely finished with the suit itself, minus the hood and the universal weapon, which I am currently working on. My deadline is Oct. 25th, so all in all this will be about 2 1/2 weeks which comes out to about 80 working hours. I'll post the photos I have so far and I'll take more to add as I complete the finishing touches. Enjoy and feel free to comment. Constructive criticism is acceptable but dont be an ass just because you have one.

Here is the beginnings of it. The entirety of the armor is made from eva craft foam. Then I plastidipped it thoroughly to give it the proper sheen.

Got some more pics of my work to add, had to pull some of these off the digital camera so it took me some time to compile them.



I wanted to show a close up of the texturing on the majority of the armor. This is on the base of the forearm bracer. I did it with a clothing iron and the corner of a 2 inch wide plastic ruler. I just kept rotating the piece and pressing the corner into the foam until it cooled. The other pic is the base of my hood before it was formed.

Here is another example of the texturing, but it's on the vest piece before plastidipping. Also, these are the shoes I intend to pair with the spats. Originally I want to go for string less slip on style shoes but all the acceptable looking ones were more than I was willing to pay. My plan is to run elastic under the tongue and make a flap to velcro down over the string holes.

So here is the test run I did on the makeup. The base is Kryolan Supracolor G82. Then I used some cheap tube white just to very lightly highlight the cheek bones and nose. I used a bit of watered down blue tube makeup to try and get some of the random speckles Ronan has on his skin since I did not have access to an airbrush. I quickly learned that I need an airbrush. Lastly, I finger painted on the black with black tube makeup. Some minor tweaks to be made, but I like it.

the whole thing is looking great so far! I am also going to use foam, It is literally my go to for everything. Great job, can't wait to see more!

Okay, so sorry about not staying updated guys. The deadline got close and I had to really work hard to finish it up. But now I can throw up the rest of the pics and the finished product. First on the in progress list would be the chain mail. due to time constraints i was unable to access simulated plastic chain mail so I had to come up with an alternative. I used Drawer mats that can be found in your local department stores, then I just plastidipped them black, and then used a layer of plastidip glossifier on them to make them pop and really give the illusion that they were more 3 dimensional than they were. I do intend to replace the mesh mats with plastic chain mail in the future, but this worked great for a quick alternative.

Next I have the cape pieces in the back. Trying to find a visual reference for them was a pain in the ass, but i got a couple shots from the film and looked at the action figure to get the design I went with. It's almost a fish bone style design done in suede or similar fabric. To recreate the thickness of leather at a fraction of the cost, I adhered a faux suede fabric to 2 mm craft foam on both sides and then cut out my pieces. It made it more sturdy and gave the edges that cut leather look.

Here is the Shoulder pads in their in progress state. I used 10 mm foam Mats for the base to give it the bulky thickness it needed, and then put 3 mm panels on the front and back "L" shapes, a 5 mm panel on the lower center portion, and for the top center panel I used another 10 mm piece, and dremel sanded the edges to a soft curved bevel. then I heated the center panels to put the texturing in them and then yet again Plastidipped it to the beautiful black leathery rubber look. Fun Fact: on this project I went through 10 cans of black plastidip.

Now the fun part... the Hood. This thing was a major pain. I didn't like the way cloth looked, and a flat layer of foam didn't want to lay properly. I literally went through more drafts of this part of the costume than any other. What i finally decided to do was go the long way and build it piece by piece like scale mail. So my lovely girlfriend cut all these little squares out while I worked on the dome part.

The dome was a piece of 5 mm foam that i cut into a 10" circle. I cut a slit in the circle from the center to one edge so that it could overlap to make the dome shape without wrinkling. I threw the foam in the oven and when it was malleable enough I shoved it into a Styrofoam dome I found at the local hobby store. once cooled, i trimmed the edges and the overlapped piece from the slit, and glued the seam together. I then cut off the front edge where my face goes.

The scale mail took about 4 full sheets worth of 3 mm foam and they were 3/4" squares with a little tab sticking of two sides for gluing. I made the outline first, and then alternated a row of horizontal tiles from the bottom, and then a row of vertical tiles from the front edge. Once it got to the curve and I could no longer do straight runs, I had to go tile by tile and place them in to make the proper curve. I will say that there is a slight hump on the back of each shoulder where the curve over my shoulders was not perfect, however the shoulder pads cover them so it kinda worked out.

For the inside of the hood, I adhered a layer of black cloth to the foam tiles so light wouldn't show through any of the holes in the tiles. For the front edge I just used a 1 1/2" strip of 3 mm foam on the top and let it over hang about an inch. Then I sandwiched the rough edge with a layer of 2 mm foam on the bottom edge matching it to the top piece.

And now the finished products. These are not the best pics of it, but i am still compiling all the photos I can get my hands on from the event. Also I am in the works of setting up a photo shoot for this one so I can get some good high quality pics of it so I can use the for Conventions and Press. I had an amazing and stressful time doing this project in just 2 weeks, but I am very proud of the work, and in the end it was all worth while as I took 4th Place at Collector Con! (P.S.: Don't mind that hammer, I ran out of time so I threw that together in like 30 minutes. It's awful and will be replaced in the future.)

Love it! I just finished mine for Halloween as well. The hood was by far the most frustrating piece, and I love what you did with yours.

GGCC was a blast! My Ronan the Accuser costume won 3rd place in the costume contest with a panel of judges that are all cosplayers. It was a great con and I can't wait to attend next year.
