for me, what makes characters like Vader, and Mumm-Ra cool. They have all this power, but they are thinkers. Mumm-Ra doesn't get upset he looses. he thinks. 'This is not a defeat, merley a setback. and each time we meet, I learn more.' He even LAUGHS when he looses, and is kind of happy cause he gets to try again.

Same goes for Darth. he Cuts off Lukes Hand. Luke gets away. He doesn't rage and go 'noooooo!. He just quietly looks down the shaft and contemplates....then gruffly goes ' bring my shuttle'.

The only time we really see him in any type of bad ass type scene is where is throws the rebel blockade runner captain against the wall, I think. all the rest is kind of quieter moments of power. Or LITERAL shows of force like in the bespin battle.


I kind of like the bad assery to be saved more for the emporer, who I think could be more prone to power moments.

vader letting loose doesn't really fit him much i think.

I'd question then, where did the brain come in? At no point in the prequels would anyone ever call Anakin 'a thinker'. Anakin is the type to flip out and scream NOOOOO when he doesn't get his way. Just like he flipped out and went on a murder spree after his mother died. A thinker also flip to the dark side at the drop of a hat to save his girlfriend by killing one of his mentors and saying 'ok, no prob' when asked to go slaughter a bunch of kids, 2 seconds after flipping.

So, i don't see that unless the emperor spent the last 20ish years teaching him 'the art of war' or something.

It is possible that by this point in time, after spending what, 10 - 15 years in his new suit, he's had time to dwell on the errors of his ways, so to speak, and has decided that taking a more intellectual approach to things is the better way to go. As you said yourself, in the past he's been rash and prone to jump into things without fully thinking things through and/or letting his emotions get the better of him and he's finally seen where it's gotten him, nowhere and gotten him nothing but pain and heartache. So, now it's the slow and steady approach for him, trying to think things through first. Plus, I'd imagine that, as some have theorized, his suit and injuries limit his physical abilities somewhat so he's no longer able to be the "man of action" that he was in the past, which is further incentive for him to be more the thinker.

point taken, but also keep in mind it's two different mind sets working on two different movies 20 years apart. what was accepted for a villain in one time, might not have worked for another one.

so, barring out universe explinations,

I kind of like the idea that you gave here.

You can also argue that with the army he DOES have in command, he no longer had the NEED to go all out or to try and prove himself, so he got a little lax in the brute force department.

gotta disagree with you Neil. I want Darth Vader to live up to that awesome persona of being the scourge of the galaxy.

When i watch ESB and ROTJ - i get the impression (as it's made quite clear) that he's commanding the army.

In ANH - i get the feeling he's like the emperor's special observer or something and that Tarkin is command of everything.

The reason that alacrity in the R1 doesn't bug me too much is - he should be about 40. I agree he's likely slower from the beating he got from Obi Wan. The suit, i'd expect, should keep him alive and enhance his strength i'd think. Hell, look at what grievous could do movement wise and DV should have later and better tech that's been upgraded through the years. He certainly has more speed and ability in his two main appearances in rebels and didn't look to be too slow.

Additionally, there COULD be a reason in the scene he's moving on the quick. People love to complain without knowing the full picture. That doesn't mean it won't trun out to actually be worse, but some don't allow for the fact that it could be explained, or be better, or not even be in the flick at all. I mean, it wouldn't be the first time something from a trailer didn't make the final cut.
 
Anybody else in here get the impression of Director Krennic as a Broadway/Opera stage performer? I imagine him on-stage holding a skull saying "To be? Or not to be?"

yep, thats the impression I get with Vader as well.

although, since they didn't plan past that first movie, I bet that would have changed if it was more fleshed out. but I think it works quite well that way. shows vader and the force is more of a myth at that point..a boogieman. then he's let loose and out in the open.

He probably wasn't too angry that tarkin and all those imperial heads died in the death star either ;o).

I wonder if Vader sees enough action that the ANH-styled-but-in-perfect-condition costume we've seen so far takes a bit of a beating, explaining the rougher appearance in ANH.

Its probably the resemblance to Sir Ian McKellen that does it, with the grey hair and cape Krennic does come over a little bit Magneto, so you may have unconsciously picked up on the similarities, with that speech and the delivery.
Ben Mendelsohn is one of those actors that has been in a stack of stuff but you probably don't recognise him, mainly in supporting roles. Plenty of nominations for awards though (he's a bit like Mark Strong in that regard). He's the best thing about "Bloodlines" on Netflixs though (at least in season one). I do think they need to run the anti aging software on a couple of characters in the flashback (if that's what they are) scenes. Where as the kid looks dead on for Jyn , her father and Krennic need to look slightly less older as well.

I think to much is being read into how Vader moved and why. The main reason is that the suit was bulky and uncomfortable with little visibility out of the helmet during filming. I don't think much more thought was given to it than that. Never heard any talk of it any of the making of stuff at the time. For my own part, I'd rather not see a ninja vader. Love to see him in action, but not in a ludicrous kind of way. That would ruin Vader for me, like it did Yoda. Vader is a presence. Too much action would kill his mystique.
