rocket sign for fun

I make signs and thought a great sign for myself would include a rocket...blasting off from a moon. So I've been using various materials and making it. I enjoy a little "steampunk" and have combined some of those details with my retro-rocket. I had a really good time sculpting the moon...
Now it needs some final details and paint!

Love the whole thing, top to bottom. All of the gestural energy in the sculpt really comes out nice here and gives it that retro ZING! =)

Very cool Jim! I love all the textures. How much was hand sculpted and how much was CNC?

Gotta love sign foam. I wish the stuff was not so darn expensive. I have only done a few sandbalsted/carved signs. Nobody in my area wants to pay for a quality sign. Just cheap vinyl and dibond stuff.....Awesome work there.

That's seriously awesome, I love it. The rocket and moon would make a great garage kit. Considered moulding any?

The basic shape of the rocket was cnc in pink foam...the legs in HDU. All the details on the rocket are hand sculpted. I keep a journal of projects I have going (at least the fun ones). It's at Haffner Signs Journal You can see lots more pictures there of my process so far. This one has been tons of fun.

Finally getting some paint on this thing. The base coats don't really show what it will ultimately look like, but it's good to be getting color on it!

That looks absolutely awesome! What type of paint did you use to finish the foam? I have been wanting to build something with pink foam for a while. Always been nervous about how to finish it.

I use a primer first...water based. Then for some strength I use a resin coating primer and coating (styrospray). Then I prime (lots of priming!) with a product called FSC-88 which is a primer used normally for HDU signs. The paints I like are NOVA acrylic and Modern Masters Metallics.

Amazing! I love old style rockets, and this is a beauty. I love the colors, and the Steampunk look.
How tall is it?

Awesome! That looks super sweet. My only gripe, and it's a small one, is the moon is all the same color green. It needs some weathering with various greens. Aside form that It is fantastic!

AZSneed: The whole thing is about 7 1/2 feet tall.
redirk2: I'll have to try to take pictures inside...the sun is blowing out the color on the pics..the moon has about 6 different layers of dark and light glaze...with a top highlight in a greenish gold. The images don't show it well.
