Robot Monster full scale : update 1-31

Well, the Robot Monster project is finally off and running. I just completed the helmet/collar today and now I'm working on the body. There are still a few things to fine tune, as always. I've seen a few replicas, but I wanted to do one that really looked like the original movie version, but not made out of paper mache, like the original. I'll keep updates on my progress (if any one cares).

Oh now that is great!

Was the skull only present on the poster? I don't recall seeing it in the film itself.

The skull was never realy seen in the movie, just the poster. They had some blob of white under the helmet in the actual movie. My plan is to block out the visible skull and have it light up to be seen.

Excellent idea. Far more classy than the film deserves!

Do you have any build photos?

I might have a few pic's on the camera, I'll have to look. The collar part of the helmet was the real challenge. I tried acrylic, styrene, MDF, and ended up using a product called kerf-core. It's bendable MDF.
The round part of the helmet is a plastic 12" dome light cover from Home Depot. It's very thin, so I added fiberglass to renforce it.
I'm waiting for the fur to come in, so I can make the (fat) gorilla body.

The Kerf-Kore looks like a great product to work with. How was it on price ? I found the website and distributer listing.

I love this project! As bad as the movie is, it is still one of my favorites - maybe because it IS so bad, and the "Ro-Man" is one of the best examples of the worst of the B-movies. Interestingly enough, when the film was released, it actually did receive some decent reviews and grossed $1,000,000 in its initial release; it cost about $16,000, so it earned more than sixty times its original investment on first release.

WOW! I had no idea it could EVER gross that much money! The movie is terrible, but I think the Robot Monster character is iconic vintage sci-fi.

I have the DVD, and have done many screen grabs to capture his likeness, but the quality of the film is horrible. I wanted to make the whole thing as close to the movie version as possible, but there seems to be quite a few differences with his space helmet. I have a few copies of high resolution stills that gave me pretty good details. I also want his body to be pretty much rolly polly, like in the movie. They did seem to make a good quality gorilla suit for him, and it looks like real animal fur was used. I bought some Mongolian fur fabric a year ago and it looks ok, but not good enough. So, I bought some goat fur/pelts and cant wait to see how they look. The pile is up to 7" long on the pelts and only 3" on the fake fur. It should make a huge difference on how realistic (to the movie) it looks.

Re: Robot Monster full scale

Yeah, the gorilla suit was pretty good quality, but it wasn't made for the film. The films director, Phil Tucker, had a space helmet (which was modified slightly for the leader's helmet) and his friend George Barrows, who played gorillas in several films and owned his own suit, played Ro-Man, providing his own suit.

Exactly why I know so much about this movie scares me... ;)

That's too cool Jaruemalak, thanks for the info.

The fur came in and I could not help laying some over his body to see what it looks like. I think it's gonna look great. It has very long strands like the original, and looks sooo much better then the mongolian junk that sheds when I look at it.

This is awesome.. So professional looking!!!

What are the tubes and antennae made of??

Re: Robot Monster full scale

Hey Robot, I think you should wear that fur vest aorund everywhere overtop your clothes for a couple of weeks. You know, you want to make sure it has a lived in look for your display.

Re: Robot Monster full scale

Hey guy's, thanks for the compliments. I've been so busy with real work & life, that I see another 1-2 months before I get done.

RJ, the fur already has a weird smell to it, so I think I'll not wear it around town
