Robocop foam suit build

So I am building (attempting to) the 1987 Robocop suit. I started with the pep files from another RPF thread and will be using a mix of them and doing the design myself. This is my first attempt at a foam build and I dont think I could have picked a harder one to start with.

This is great :)
It's really awesome that you have provided videos of your process. I think this will be helpful for people that are confused/have questions about the pepakura program.
I look forward to seeing how the suit comes along!

Here are some pics of the torso. I have used a wetsuit as the base and I am in the process of building the ridging. IMG_2243.JPGIMG_2244.JPG

Nice to see progress is coming on your build. And I see you have constructed a nice tape mannequin.

I'm still at a full sprint on my kids Iron Man suit. I've got less than two months left and still TONS to do. I have to make a few shortcuts, but she nor any of the kids will notice. and i can always go back and tweak it later. I have to leave out some detail lines on the legs and on the helmet for now. But I can't wait to get back to my robo build. But sadly after all this time I've decided to remake my chest piece and go bigger. It's sat for so long and has been moved so many times, it's actually not fared to well. So I was weary to start with the size...so bigger and better I guess. Plus I can restart with the torso as well and make it my fat ass size friendly.

Oh, and I forgot to say...looks like your tape mannequin is a little bow legged.

Haha yeah I did a really bad job stuffing that side of the leg. It was a lot harder than I thought it would be as well, height wise it is perfect and has made working on the suit soooo much easier. I know your pain about the chest piece, I have decided to redo mine as well. I just wasnt quite happy with how it was sitting due to all the adjustments I had done, so I have cut it in half again and trimmed a little more to get it to sit right and I will be using it as a template to make the next one. I have found a guy on ebay selling a 1:1 cast of the original chest piece that I nearly bought. But I will not let it beat me, I would rather redo it 3 times and be 100% happy with it, so it will be worth it in the end. The legs are my next challenge, can't wait!

IMG_2246.JPG Nearly complete on stage 1 of the torso. I just need to trim the 1st ridge to fit the top of the leg panels and put three panels on the back. Very happy with it though. I did the design free hand and then made the templates in photoshop. Luckily I have a large format printer so I can print them all on one piece of paper.

The legs are next and I will be doing them with a base and then building out on top. That way I get the nice chunky look and also it will give me a compartment to make the gun holster with. I'm going to have the panels open by themselves and if I can fit it in I would like to have the holster pop in and out as well. The controls done by touch pads in on the left glove. the gun will go in my right thigh as I am right handed.

Now THAT is pretty ambitious to try and pull off the leg WITH an operational holster. I look forward to see how it turns out for you and wish you the best of luck in its creation.

But I'm with you on wanting to be fully satisfied with the build. As I mentioned in the other thread with my pics, I was pleased with how the chest turned out but wasn't 100% on it because it was just a little smaller than i probably should have had it. But it was apparent after i had to expand the torso so much and realized the lower part of the rib cage of the chest was rubbing too much on the torso.

Yeah I know, I have given up on the pop out holster but I should still be able to have the doors open. The Audrino board will sit in the top off the thigh section, I now looking at setting the gun into the base layer foam or I might just have a printed pic of the gun sitting inside with all the robotic ****. The thigh has been a lot easier than I thought, I am no longer using the pep files. I am now just using pics from the movie for reference.

IMG_2304.JPGIMG_2305.JPGRight thigh is done for now. The detail in the side is just for example, I have not used the pep files for this. I worked from pics taken from the movie. The lower side section sits on top of the base. This (fingers crossed) will become the doors. I am going to go see a guy who does robotic work here in Perth and get some advice for that.

Still need to do a bit of work on it but that is more in the finishing stage. I will be going back to the chest piece and getting that finished before I do the left thigh.

IMG_2306.JPGI have just tacked the front onto manni for the moment so I can get the shape right and get the breast plate placement correct as well. So glad I decided to redo the chest piece, while using the old one as a template has saved me soooooo much time.

IMG_2331.JPGChest piece is now done for the 2nd time. Much happier with this one, I will leave it as is till the finish stage when I will add the detail into it. Also finished the front of the cod piece.

That's looking really nice. I was worried there a few pics up that your chest would be rubbing too much on your torso, but your last pic had the detail and flare up on the bottom.

Do you have any problems with bad rubbing where the thigh meets the cod piece? As good as the picture is, it doesn't do much justice as far as looking good for mobility. But you might also have pinned it higher than it might actually sit on you. Just curious is all.

Yeah it's pinned there at the moment, I will make some minor adjustments where the lip of the thigh meets at the cod piece (thin it down a bit) other than that it's ok. I will be wearing a black morph suit (face cut out) and I am thinking of using Velcro to help keep the thighs in place along with some straps to join it to the torso. I've found walking around in it that the thighs can move around a bit after a while.

The chest piece fits really nicely, I still have to put in the sections at the sides where the arm holes will be. Only problem is it will make it a pain in the ass to put on. Thinking about doing it in a layer of fiberglass so I can then cut it in half and just join the two pieces together when I put it on using some clips or something. It would also help keep the shape nice and hard as well. I ended up trimming down the old back piece and using it as a template. I then pinned them on to manni while I made adjustments and then glued the two together once I was happy with it.

I am going to be doing the bicep pieces next. Should hopefully have them done in about 2 weeks.
