Re: ROBOCOP Costume Build - (Video Update) Page 3 / Post #56

Thanks for all the RoboLove guys.
It was definitely a dream come true to try those parts on and have them actually fit me very well
and it's not even close to done.

I'm working on the abs/cod now out of 1/2" EVA foam.
So far so good.

Should update that this weekend.

Awesome! I have a robocop suit and I hated it was a one size fits all deal so I made new parts and soft pieces. I look forward to see how you approach it. I hope you the best of luck. I need a place to buy replacement parts lol.

I was wondering when you would get to start this :)

Looks amazingly proportionate in the suit up video.
Can't wait to see this evolve and finished !

I really wish they'd make decent store bought costumes. I don't get why they're so inaccurate at times.
Very cool, looks straight out of the movie :thumbsup
Thanks for checking it out Doc.

Thanks a lot. This project has been off and on for a long time. I would really love to finish it this year.

Stef - amazing work, as always! Will we see a Robo breakdance when complete? :)

I would think that the costume companies wouldn't see enough $$$ return on making a decent costume. Which, in a way, is a good thing.

Yo Stealth! Got back to building my Robocop suit. Last year I got as far as building a duct tape dummy/mannequin out of the method you provided so thanks for that. I recently joined the RPF to get info on robo pep files, if you can add any suggestions please feel free, my post is below:
“Greetings from the Philippines! Thank you all for sharing your skills! Special thanks to laellee and gaiatron for the pep and foam files. I also follow Stealth’s thread on his Robocop build. I just have a few questions I hope you guys could help me with: 1.) I tried to print the pep files using a dot matrix printer (Epson lx 300+II) and the print does not match the layout image in pep so much so that there are missing lines or images between pages ( a gap or skip). I tried using letter and A4 size and still the same thing. Do I have to configure something in the printer settings? 2.) I am 5 feet 7 inches – how do I scale the file to my height (the initial prints looks too big for me) and 3.) would it be possible to receive the reveal and Murphy head files password thru email? Thanks a lot! Don’t see too many “good” Robocop costumes locally. I’m hoping to build one with a motorized gunarm and jetpack (with electronic light and sounds) from the third movie. If anyone out there has pep files or tips on building the gunarm and jetpack I would appreciate all the help! Thanks!”
Thanks Stealth. Looking forward to your finished build!

Stealth! Solved the printing problem and have started to scale and print. Will be cutting foam over the weekend!

Hey Guys,
This is addressed to all you guys following this (robocop the original for pepakura-laellee) and ecmuniz2's thread. Also to stealth who initially helped me.
Thank you ecmuniz2 for the inputs and FINISHED costume- that was awesome, inspiring and provided great ideas for the challenges in building my robocop costume. Just a few quick questions: Has anyone experimented or does anyone know how to adjust scale out of proportion (as in adjusting only width or height without affecting the other)? The reason for this is having seen the finished work of ecmuniz2 which I believe is based on the wireframe pdo from laellee this pep file is somewhat different from the look that I wanted for the costume. I had pictured a robocop suit with proportions similar to the bulkier look of the second film, essentially bigger chest and leg parts (the parts for the arms are big enough, the thighs and chest have to be a bit bigger to cast the illusion and besides I plan to have a working thigh holster with an auto9 so the thighs have to be big to make room for that). I was thinking of importing the pdo files and paste in word (.docx) where I would then "pull" the picture sideways to make it wider. It's either that or manually cut away the resulting bigger but longer foam parts (if I want them bigger using the pepakura scale method adjustment I know of I would have to trim off the length - scary) both of which are risky in terms of loosing detail or really getting it done to the right scale (specially the copy paste on word method). ANY IDEAS ANYONE?
These reference pics are mine but they might give you an idea:

I will be starting my own thread as soon as I have enough pics of the foam build. The first cut foam piees sucked (I suck at cutting foam) so I commissioned someone with better hands to do it and then I would glue them together. PLEASE HELP. THANKS!

Increasing the scales to make the larger proportions you are looking for is easiest done freehand. For the chest, abs, cod and neck, you can actually leave those as is, simply scale them to the larger size that you would like.
As for the thighs, shins, biceps, and forearms, stretching or widening the pieces without modifying the files properly will distort the details of the pep. The round detailing of the biceps and thighs, for instance, will end up oval-shaped, and won't look proportionally correct. Any round detail (or square one, for that matter) will have it's shape changed, and the finished product will show that. The easiest solution (outside of modifying the actual 3d model) is to build the pieces to the scale width that you are looking for, ignoring their length, and then free hand sectioning the pieces to make them stubbier. I'm definitely not saying that it's easy to do, especially with all of the panel lines and detail that the suit has, but it can be done.

Also, just to clarify, ecmuniz was building with my peps, but Stealth is not. This build is (to my knowledge) ALL Stealth's creation from his own custom templates, designs, etc... (y)thumbsup I'm pretty sure he started this while I was still in the 3d modeling stages of my suit. :)

Been a while since I visited this thread. Will try to upload progress pics of my build (with the help of a less busy friend).

Laelee, before I found your thread, Stealth was one of the first builder I was able to contact. I was following his iron man pep and foam tutorials and followed his method on duct tape mannequin building. Then we exchanged a few ideas about robocop as we were both robo fans. I'm done with the mannequin and it has survived one year and three major floods in our country. So hat's off to Stealth for that! Yep Stealth's build is more of estimates based on I think the Neca 15 inch figure... great estimations!

Stealth! Thanks again for the initial inspiration and support. I know you have a lot of projects going. Hope to see more of robo. My progress on my build, pics below: Once again thanks guys for all your info and support! Could not have done it without you guys!

My armor progress on the helmet and chest piece care of Laelee's foam files:Image1447.jpgGEDC0373.JPGGEDC0373.JPG

Will post more as I progress. We finished the chest piece with all the details but I did'nt take a pic as we were still tweaking. Started on the gloves too. Like Stealth, we deviated and started some "original" designs and methods such as the gloves (pics later) and the hinged helmet:GEDC2259.JPG

Looking forward to Stealth's robo!

Thanks man, hope to see more updates on your robo soon. Not been able to visit your youtube page, what are you building right now?

I haven't been working on anything really.

I've been in Vancouver, BC for the past few months working in the film industry.
I can't really say what film but it's HUGE. I've held my own while being there.

Great experience working on costumes in film.
My speed and ability to make revisions was an asset in that kind of fast paced environment.
It was "normal" speed for me. A Lot of sculpting, scratch building, molding and casting. Old school prop making.
Love it.

I'm home temporarily. Not here for long though. I'll be heading back soon for some other projects for the film

I can't really start anything up really.
