Robocop 2014 (Post-release)

Deric

killing the unarmed cop is something I forgot to mention. I was surprised when that happened too. I guess it was Murphy's emotional high taking over his actions. And the shaky cam, I guess I'm getting used to it. All movies seem to be doing it now and I barely noticed it.

Didn't he stun the cop with his NI-408?

I ditched it for obvious reasons. They changed Lewis into a dude, and made the wife's role only bigger so she can be this action movie's damsel. I realize that Lewis wasn't really a force to be reckoned with in the original, but gosh does she at least try.

Robocop had tasers. Why didn't OCP just give their droid army tasers and/or other non-lethal weapons? Problem solved.

I don't believe so. The actor shot didn't act like he was tazed. I may be wrong but I plan on seeing the movie again later this week and will pay close attention during that scene. If it was the tazer the actor playing the unarmed cop could have hammed it up a bit to relay that.

He didn't use the Taser on everyone, he used guns as well. But he definitely had some electrical stun device of some sort.

I've read that Padilla was not happy with the studios interference. The fact is, if your movie subject is drones, warfare and military action, death and and destruction is simply a natural by product which cannot and should not be watered down.

yes we know money is at stake but surely they can allow artistic integrity to remain intact?

I think people also forget how powerful and important the musical score is for a film.

Listen to basil polideouris's score and the haunting sadness, the action and triumph it conveys alongside the visuals.

This remake had a very poor and generic score which was barely noticeable, almost as though it was tacked on during a weekend break.
It didn't make you feel anything, no emotion, nothing.

What we got was a watered down movie catered for the superhero kids market in order to sell toys.

It it could have been so much more but instead it was a wasted opportunity.

He definitely uses the taser on the cop though. You can see the clip of him pointing it at the cop at the end of "Man and Machine Part 2."

Also, has anyone else noticed that RoboCop is holding an Auto-9 in one of the posters?

The misogyny claims around is forum strain credibility....

Just watched the scene again. When he shoots him you can hear the tazer sound and the actor acts like he's being tazed.

Glad I don't follow the "critics" on this board. Saw the movie today and I really have no major complaints, it is what it is, and I was entertained.

Hopefully this won't even score made to video sequels. I think this movie was going to be a turd of a social commentary even before the studio got in the way. Directors need to learn that the studios don't give a crap about art they just want cheap easy money.

Re: Robocop Reboot (Pre-release)

Kind of dorky quoting myself but looks like they actually have a scene where they plug him into the body... and it looks pretty cool.

I'm even more stoked to see this now.

Here's the site I got these pictures from... pretty awesome behind the scenes stuff.
RoboCop redux: inside the film?s biggest scenes | fxguide

I keep seeing the silver Robo referred to as version 1. One thing that would actually be kind of cool is if, in the movie, they showed a scene of them "head swapping" him onto a different chassis... I picture something like the scene in Star Trek: First Contact when the Borg queen's head and spine are lowered into her body.
Funny, have thought that out it definitely makes me wonder how they are going to explain how much of him is still human/organic under the cyborg body, because if they are swapping him around into different bodies, it's not just his head they're moving.... they also have to explain that stupid flesh hand. Does that mean his arm is under the armor? Did they just put all of the Robo-armor over top of his charred human stump of a body like Darth Vader?

Is it wrong that I would let my 12 year old watch the criterion cut of Robocop which is essentially unrated instead of letting her watch this PG-13 rated piece of trash?

Yes. I won't let my son watch the original because of all the adult references/language. Not judging your parenting. My father certainly didn't think it was an issue when he took me to see movies like Terminator, RoboCop, Aliens, etc. when I was my son's age. But I'm a little more leary. I guess I'm just conditioned to think that way by our touchy-feely society.

Is it true that this robocop uses a taser at one point in the movie? Does it make sense in that instance?
PG-13 strikes again.

I think he tases a cop. Not necessarily a criminal or bad guy so it would be kind of messed up to waste someone that's just doing their job.

Welp io9 apparently got paid off for their review, then again reviewers can't be trusted since their livelihoods are tied to kissing the studio's butts.

I don't put much credit in anything "opinion-based" that's posted on io9, Gizmodo, or any other off-shoots. I've noticed those sites foster a lot of stupidity.

I don't care for how agile Murphy is, and the bad guys didn't leave me rooting for him to off them either.

Yeah, I just watched the preview of the training scene again and realized he does rolls onto the ground and everything. Seems a bit much for a bot. Maybe if C3PO could pull of moves like that I'd be more accepting. ;)

I absolutely loved this movie.

My likes:

The strong family storyline. Much better than the original.
All the armor, even the black one. The silver was a great nod to the original.
The weapons. Not wimped down at all. Even the taser could be lethal, and he killed plenty of bad guys.
Samuel Jackson. I thought this was a vital part of the story - influencing public opinion.
The robotic movement. Plenty of nods to the original, and quite realistic for robots of today, let alone 2028.
Michael Keaton - Great performance, great villain.
Gary Oldman - Perfect as usual.
Loved the use of the original music.
Loved the actual Detroit filming locations. Not sure any of the original (other than the Cobo Hall flyover) was filmed there.
The biological Murphy. That was messed up!
The nutrition infusion system. So much better than a baby food dispenser.
The drug house bust. Very reminiscent of the original, but much shorter.
ED-209, Awesome!
Police corruption. I didn't see the Chief involvement coming.
PG 13 rating - didn't take anything away from the story or the action.

My "could have done betters" (not many):

The hand on a stick. I'm not going to loose any sleep over it.
The warehouse training music. Quite forgettable and didn't add anything to the scene.
Rick Mattox character. I just couldn't buy he was smart enough to be a robotics engineer.
The marketing guy. Just annoying.
Antoine Vallion. Why not use Clarence Boddicker? And he was taken out too easily.

All of the above is just my personal opinion. It's OK if you disagree with any or all of my points. I plan on seeing it again.

I'm seeing it this weekend and I'm expecting this review to be close to my overall view of the movie.

you haven't seen the movie, you don't intend on seeing the movie, just on this film alone you've had over 12 negative, pointless posts raving about a film you hate.

Seriously dude, you give basement dwellers a bad name.

Seriously, Wes is entitled to his opinion, just like you are. That doesn't give anyone a bad name; it just means from what he's seen from the trailers and whatnot that it simply doesn't appeal to him. All of us decide on things from info we glean ahead of time in one way or another.

Wes' opinion of a movie doesn't spell a name out for anyone; please let's not start making things personal here.
